Genesis G80: Our greatest look but at up to date BMW 5 Sequence rival

Genesis’ facelifted G80 sedan has been snapped, giving us a better look at its restyled front and rear end styling.

Shorts Car captured a camouflaged prototype undergoing testing.

The latest photos give us a better look at the G80‘s new headlight and tail light design, with less camouflage. Other changes include a fresh wheel design which could be exclusive to the Sport model.

A prototype G80 was snapped earlier this year and featured a new version of the brand’s ‘G-Matrix’ pattern for its grille and new cube-like headlights similar to the G90 sedan not sold in Australia.

It’s expected Genesis will make changes to the front grille and rear bumper design of its sedan.

Based on the exhaust tips, this appears to be an combustion-powered prototype.

According to reports from Korean Car Blog, Genesis may look to add the G90’s twin-turbo 3.5-litre V6 engine with its electric supercharger, however it’s unclear if Genesis will make any other changes.

Per Korean Car Blog, it’s possible the G80 could adopt the same 27-inch OLED wraparound display that has been spied in the GV80.

The news outlet reports Genesis may make other interior changes and add its latest safety and tech features.

Australian-market models could gain Genesis Connected Services, which allows drivers to access safety, security and convenience features either in-car or on a smartphone.

Features of this connectivity suite include in-car voice control, SOS emergency calling, and the ability to remotely view your vehicle’s location.

The current G80 arrived here in 2020, so it’s approaching the midway point of its lifecycle. With all new product launches from 2025 onwards to be electric vehicles, this will be the last generation of G80 to offer combustion power.

There is an electric version of the current model already, called the Electrified G80. The two-prong petrol/electric strategy with the G80 line is now being employed by BMW with its 5 Series and electric i5 models.

There is no indication on when the facelift model will be revealed but Korean Car Blog reports it could launch between June and August 2024 in Korea and European and US-spec may arrive at the end of 2024.

According to a post in the Genesis Vehicles Australia Facebook page, Genesis Australia has emailed customers to confirm it’s “making preparations for the new G80 range in Australia”. However it’s unclear if the “new G80 range” is the upcoming facelift model.

Genesis now fields three electric vehicles, two of which use combustion platforms and one of which is on the dedicated E-GMP architecture.

While sedan sales are sagging globally and in Australia, Genesis has committed to continue offering sedans.

The body style is particularly important in its home market of Korea, where the G80 was one of the top 10 best-selling vehicles last year and Hyundai’s Grandeur is a regular fixture in the top 5.
