Subsequent BMW X2 teased with coupe SUV physique, obtainable electrical energy

A new generation of BMW’s smallest coupe SUV is coming, and it’s set to offer an electric powertrain for the first time.

The new X2 will be joined by the electric iX2, and BMW confirmed during its 2023 annual conference they will launch before the end of the year, with first customer deliveries expected to start next year.

A teaser video posted to BMW’s social media shows a shadowy view of the next-generation X2’s profile and front end ahead of the crossover’s imminent reveal.

Although the teaser only provides a glimpse at the second generation of the X2, there have been several prototypes spied on the roads in recent months, suggesting the SUV is nearing the end of development.

From the video, we can see the X2 is adopting a more rakish roofline and a small spoiler to provide more of a coupe SUV shape than the current model, which has a more hatchback-like appearance.

We can see the new X2 is the latest BMW to offer an illuminated grille. In this application, it’s the perimeter of the grille that incorporates lighting.

While BMW hasn’t revealed many technical specifications for the model, it’s likely the next-generation X2 will ride on the brand’s FAAR platform also used by the X1.

It’s expected the new X2 will be offered with a range of petrol and diesel powertrains, as well as the pure electric offering.

In Australia, the X1 is offered with a choice of one electric and two petrol powertrains, while the additional petrol, diesel, and plug-in hybrids are offered in Europe.

The electric iX2 is expected to feature the same powertrain as the iX1 xDrive30e, which it will be manufactured alongside in Regensburg, Germany.

The electric SUV has a dual-motor all-wheel drive system making a combined 230kW and 494Nm, good for a claimed 100km/h sprint time of 5.6 seconds and a range of between 413 and 438km on a single charge.

With the iX1 and iX2, BMW will have direct rivals for the Audi Q4 e-tron, which comes in regular SUV and coupe SUV (“Sportback”) body styles.

Spy shots also suggest there will be a hotter M35i version of the combustion-powered X2, with a lower ride height, quad exhaust pipes and large cross-drilled brake discs.

Inside the cabin, it’s expected the next-gen X2 will be largely identical to the X1 with the BMW Curved Display featuring a 10.7-inch infotainment screen and 10.25-inch digital driver display.

It could be one of the first BMW models to get the brand’s new iDrive 9 operating system.

BMW ceased production of the first-generation X2 last year ahead of the next generation coming this year.
