Shifting Out for the First Time? This is How one can Plan It

Going through the moving process is tough no matter how many times you’ve been through it – which is why doing it for the first time can feel incredibly overwhelming!

Moving into your own space for the first time requires a lot of planning and purchasing, but if you have things well-organized and prepared, the whole process could go off without a hitch.

There’s no secret hack to make moving quick and easy, and there’s no way to offset the exhaustion. However, if you follow the steps below, you’ll have the smoothest and easiest experience possible.

Create a Budget

First of all, realize that financial planning is about to become essential. When you decide to move out, it’s a good idea to take a look at your income and create a plan for your projected living expenses. You might realize that you need to spend some time saving up to move out, and that’s okay!

If you figure that your budget is ready to take on the load of living alone, create a budget for the move itself. You’ll need to make quite a few purchases to furnish your home, and there are a few other expenses associated with the moving process that you’ll want to be prepared for.

Take Measurements

Another great tip is to make sure you purchase furniture that fits. For most people, their first place can be relatively small since it’s a starting point. This is why it’s important to not get carried away and purchase furniture designed for your “one day” home only to find it doesn’t actually fit in your “now” home.

The best thing you can do is measure the rooms in your new space before shopping, and use a couch size guide to help you ensure you’re picking the right size and shape couch for your space. The same rule can be applied to your bed, wardrobe, and any other big ticket items.

Make Lists

When you’re planning something as major as a move, you need to become a master of lists. Even if you don’t typically consider yourself planner or organizer, this is one time that you’ll need to rely on something other than your brain to keep everything in order.

Your first “list” should be your budget – a list of expenses to account for, and make sure it’s comprehensive. It’s always better to overbudget than underbudget! Next, make a list of all the things you’ll need to purchase for your new home, and a list of services you’ll need to get set up, such as utilities and internet connection. Finally, create a moving checklist of everything you need to get done in the weeks and days leading up to the move.

Prioritize Essentials

Finally, make sure to focus your time, energy, and money on what matters most. Prioritize buying items like a refrigerator before using your precious, limited cash on pretty vases and a welcome mat. You can always choose to upgrade your home later down the line, but for now, you need to make sure that you can get by with the basics.

This is a great time to ask family members if they have any hand-me-downs to help you get set up!
