It’s such a pleasure to have Katie Wells, aka The Wellness Mama here today. From the blog, to the Wellnesse product line, to Katie herself, I’ve been a big fan for years. In fact, Katie was on the HIM & HER Show a few years ago talking about how to optimize all areas of your life, running a business, parenting and more. I’m sure we can all agree Wellness Mama has been an incredible go-to for health and wellness topics for a while now.
We’re actually doing a blog swap today, so be sure to check out my post on her blog which is all about ice rolling.
Anyway, Katie is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to natural and holistic approaches to health and wellness. So who better to write a post about oral care than her. She’ll be telling us all about the best non-toxic toothpaste and tongue scraping – an easy hack to implement that is really good for your health (and your breath).
With the launch of Mouth Tape (join the list here) and the incredible response from the community, it’s clear to see that way more people than I thought are into proper oral care. For years now I’ve always gone to the dentist every 6 months, been tongue scraping, oil pulling, carried Wisps in my handbag and in more recent years am all about natural non-toxic oral products (you can see them all here). So to have Katie, a real expert in the space, here to share her take on tongue scraping and the mouth-body connection is a real treat.
Without further ado, let’s welcome her to the blog.

Benefits of Tongue Scraping and Why You Should Start Today
Hi! Katie here.
If there are two things you know we love around here, they’re helping you be your best self and life hacks. Today, we get to talk about both! Wellness can be a big, confusing topic, but we’re here with a cheat code that’ll make your life a whole lot easier: Reading your tongue.
It sounds wild, we know, but bear with us. First, some background.
The Mouth-Body Connection
Did you know that your mouth is actually an incredible indicator of your overall health?
Most of us get a cavity or have dry mouth and think we’re dehydrated or didn’t brush well enough – and that’s probably true – but these symptoms can also mean that something much bigger is wrong. The mouth is the literal gateway to the rest of the body. What we eat is digested, and even what we spit out (like toothpaste – more on that later) can be quickly absorbed into the bloodstream.
If that’s not crazy enough, there are eleven types of oral bacteria linked to conditions like heart disease and cancer.
So, where does the tongue come in?
Your Tongue & Your Health
Your tongue touches everything that goes into your mouth – from food to stubborn Amazon packages to your nails (don’t do those last two, btw). And in the process, it can accumulate harmful bacteria, dead skin cells, viruses, and more; this usually looks like a white, yellow, or even green film that can indicate bacterial overgrowth or a fungal infection.
In a less serious but equally unpleasant scenario, this build-up harms teeth, causes bad breath, reduces taste, and, honestly, just looks and feels really gross.
Needless to say, having all that junk sitting in your mouth is bad news, and brushing isn’t always enough to take care of it.
Which brings us to our life hack.
Tongue Scraping
If you’re familiar with the world of natural oral health, you’ve probably heard of tongue scraping before; if not, it’s exactly what it sounds like: You use a u-shaped tool to scrape the gunk, germs, and toxins off your tongue (and into the sink).
The practice comes from ancient medicine, but it’s grown pretty popular in natural health niches. As we talked about already, your tongue and mouth can be a strong indicator of your oral and overall health, and scraping helps keep your tongue in pristine condition.
Whether you’re noticing signs of a serious condition or just sick of constantly checking your breath on the DL (been there, done that), tongue scraping is one of the best steps you can take for your oral health – and it’s crazy easy to add into your routine.
Every morning and night, take your tongue scraper (I use my Copper Tongue Scraper from Wellnesse), put it on the back of your tongue, gently press down, and pull forward. Then, just rinse and repeat. You’ll notice an immediate improvement in appearance, odor, and even your sense of taste.
Choosing Killer Products
What you put into your mouth matters just as much as what you kick out of it, which is why I couldn’t call us friends if I didn’t tell you about the best natural, fluoride-free toothpaste I’ve ever tried (also from Wellnesse).
For decades, fluoride has been the oral care ingredient, but recent studies have uncovered links to thyroid dysfunction, lowered cognitive function, and reduced IQ. Oh, and it’s a confirmed neurotoxin. Who would want to put that in their mouths?
Spoiler alert: Not me.
Wellnesse Toothpaste cleanses, whitens, and strengthens teeth without fluoride, glycerin, or artificial sweeteners. It’s their number one bestseller, and for good reason: it remineralizes weak and damaged enamel using hydroxyapatite (one of the primary minerals in teeth) and powerful, effective, totally natural ingredients.
What’s not to love?
