Mexican flag carrier Aeromexico is expanding north of the border with nine new seasonal routes.

Aeromexico says that these new flights will operate in conjunction with Delta Air Lines as part of the joint cooperation agreement between the two carriers.

Over the years, Delta and Aeromexico have participated in a joint venture on flights between the U.S. and Mexico. Delta also holds an equity stake in the Mexico City-based carrier that it has increased over time.

The joint venture hit a big snag earlier this year when the U.S. Department of Transportation ruled that the tie-up must end.

That said, the carriers have pledged to fight the DOT ruling that is scheduled to take effect by the end of October.

“With these new routes, the airline will reinforce its presence in the United States with these winter season options,” Aeromexico added in a statement.

Aeromexico’s new routes aren’t necessarily all new. The airline last operated flights from Monterrey to Las Vegas, New York and Orlando in 2020, Cirium schedules show. The carrier last flew from Monterrey to Miami in 2016 and from Guadalajara to Las Vegas in 2014.

Either way, this is a notable expansion in the U.S. and comes after a few recent expansions from Aeromexico, including a recently announced new service from Miami to Cancun.

Since Mexican carriers once again received permission to add new U.S. routes, Aeromexico has largely been focused on growing in leisure markets.

Historically, Aeromexico almost exclusively served the U.S. from Mexico City, but in recent months, the carrier has launched many more new leisure routes, such as from Manzanillo, Mexico, to Atlanta and Los Angeles. This latest expansion also fits the bill for leisure-focused routes.
