Aidan Bissett Interview
Some of our viewers might not be familiar with you as a musical artist, can you tell us who are? And a little about your musical journey and maybe even how you started as a musical artist?
My name is Aidan Bissett and I started releasing music about 3 years ago. It wasn’t until I was a junior in high school that I fell in love with the creation of music. I would spend hours in my bedroom watching videos on how to produce and write songs. My social life was basically non existent, but I was okay with it because I found a true passion in music. After I graduated, I moved out to LA to pursue artistry full time. I was thrown into sessions almost every day for months, constantly working on my songwriting ability. I began listening to british rock bands and alternative bands from the early 2000s. That raw sound shaped the way I created music. Now with this new wave of music I feel I have truly found my sound.
How has this tour been for you? Any highlights so far?
I absolutely love touring. Being on the road is the coolest experience. My favorite memory from the tour so far would probably be the Orlando show. That show was really special to me because it was the first time my entire family got to see me perform. It was a moment of true connection between us. They finally all understood what it was like for me to be an artist.
Congratulations on your new single “Out of My League”! Can you share the inspiration behind the song and what it means to you personally? Something that I noticed is the vulnerability and the pursuit of love. Can you elaborate on the message you wanted to convey through the song?
I have always been a little shy when it comes to girls. I was never the outright confident guy, when writing this song I wanted to take the standpoint of “ya she’s out of my league, but that’s not going to stop me.”
How do you approach the songwriting process? Can you take us through your creative process and how you bring your ideas to life?
I am very sonically driven. I am drawn to sounds and instruments so I usually build songs around music before lyrics. I want the music to make a person feel something without any words. If the instrumentation can do that, you have something very special on your hands. After I get some kind of music down it will help me bring lyrics to life. A lot of the times a story will come very quickly after I feel connected to the instrumental.
Since the beginning, your music has always sort of had this through line about desire and being in love, and you have this connection to very early 2000s rom-com nostalgia. Can you talk about your experience with love as a young person?
Love at a young age is the most beautiful thing in the world, but it’s also one of the most difficult as well. Young adults don’t know what they want in life yet, but they are all pursuing something. I have found it’s almost impossible to find someone on the same page as myself at this age. I learned so much about myself in the past two years, which is probably why my music has matured as quickly as it has. There’s more to love than just butterflies, there’s anxiety, heartbreak, peace… the list goes on.
Many artists have unique pre-show rituals or routines. Do you have any special practices or habits that help you prepare mentally and emotionally before performing?
YES! first an hour before the show I have a vocal warmup I must always do. Then around 15 minutes before show me and my band mates come together in the green room and play “song 2” by blur, followed by “walk idiot walk” by The Hives. While these songs are playing we are jumping around and getting loose, just having fun to let nerves out before the show. Then when there’s about 2 minutes before the show we head to side stage and put our hands together and chant a word of the day before walking on stage.
Can you share an anecdote or story about a memorable fan interaction that has impacted you?
One fan at a recent show said she flew in from korea just for the show. Another one said she drove all the way from mexico. It’s interactions like these that leave me in awe. The fact that people would travel that far just to see the show is unreal.
In what ways do you stay inspired and motivated as a musician? How do you overcome creative blocks or challenges in your career?
I constantly am listening to new music and going to live shows. I feel like seeing a band live always motivates me to create. There’s something truly special about seeing music live and that feeling is what I want to capture in music. The way people connect to it is incredible. So if i’m ever feeling down about a creative block I will go to a live show and it always energizes me again.
Obviously, you are a talented musician, I’m curious who you are listening to right now or who has caught your ears?
I’m a massive fan of The 1975, as well as The Strokes, Coldplay, and U2. All of these bands have something so unique about them. Their sounds are specific to them, and that’s what I want to create for myself.
On that note If you could say anything to your supporters and fans what would you say?
I appreciate you more than you know. You make this all possible for me and the fact that you listen to my songs leaves me in awe everyday. Thank you.
Is there anything else you want to share?
I have a new single coming out June 2nd called ‘Bloom’ and I have never been so excited about a song. It’s a step into the new era of my music. I feel it’s pushing me into a new adult world that I’m beyond excited to explore.
