Actress Alex Hook, a native of Canada, and Queen’s University graduate, has captivated audiences with her portrayal of Teen Kat Landry in Hallmark Channel’s hit series, The Way Home. It’s a privilege to share her insights as she reflects on what being part of the Hallmark family means to her, what motivated her as an actor, and what fans can expect in the upcoming season.
Known for its heartfelt storytelling and multi-generational appeal, The Way Home blends nostalgia with emotional depth, and Alex’s performance brings authenticity and relatability to her role. From navigating the complexities of growing up in the ’90s to embracing the challenges of portraying a character integral to the show’s rich timeline, Alex has formed a deep connection with both her character and the series.
Alex shared, “When I first read the role of Teen Kat, I was captivated by the depth and complexity of the writing,” says Alex. “It’s not often you come across a supporting role whose journey feels so meaningful and relevant to the leading role, played by Chyler Leigh.” Reflecting on Teenage Kat’s character, she adds, “Teen Kat was navigating the messiness of growing up, family expectations, and her own emotions, and the writing captured all of that with such honesty. Not to mention, it all took place in the ’90s, which was an incredible journey for me. Kat’s story forced me to consider the strength it takes to embrace imperfection and the bravery required to reconcile with the past. That’s something I think resonates universally, and I felt privileged to bring that to life.”
Alex also highlighted how the show has connected her with fans across generations. As she explains, “This show has allowed me to connect with such a wide and diverse audience, even though my role only appears in one timeline,” and “Themes like family, love, and resilience resonate with viewers of all ages and backgrounds. It’s rewarding to know that different generations can see parts of themselves reflected in at least one character. As an actor, it’s a privilege to not only entertain but also spark conversations among families and viewers from all walks of life, and this show has made that possible.”
When asked what viewers can look forward to this season, she shared, “As viewers have seen so far, we are now exploring the 1970s and diving into Colton and Del’s past. There will be many questions answered, but of course, in classic The Way Home fashion, there will be many new storylines uncovered. Expect plot twists and cliffhangers as we learn more about the pond and the Landry history.”
Alex also opened up about what inspired her to pursue acting. “I will admit, my love for acting is quite selfish. Don’t get me wrong, I love to put a smile on people’s faces, but what’s kept me in the game this long is intrinsic motivation,” she shares. “Acting has always allowed me to explore emotions I wouldn’t typically tap into in my everyday life. I’m not someone who naturally experiences emotional extremes, but acting creates a space for me to unlock those feelings in a way that is both therapeutic and true to myself. I not only develop an insane sense of self-awareness in how I activate these emotions, but because of this, I’ve come to see acting as one of the greatest exercises in empathy. To bring a character to life, you’re given a set of actions and reactions on paper, and it’s your job to understand and justify their responses and fill the gaps. It’s a constant challenge to connect with and honor the character’s truth, which is deeply fulfilling for me as an actor and person.”
Alex also recognizes that being part of the Hallmark brand is a meaningful milestone in an actor’s career. She shares, “Being part of the Hallmark Channel is special because it’s known for creating heartfelt stories that bring people together. The network’s commitment to hope and positivity resonates deeply with its loyal audience, and it’s rewarding to contribute to content that feeds those emotions. The sense of community I felt simply being on set—surrounded by the cast, crew, Hallmark executive team, Neshama team, and our incredible showrunners, Alex and Heather—was unmatched. I’m convinced it’s that Hallmark ‘feel-good’ spark that trickles all the way to the production itself.”
In 2015, Ms. Hook was honored with the Joey Award for Best Actress in a Commercial, a distinguished Canadian award recognizing teen talent. She is also known for her role as Frankie in the hit Nickelodeon youth television program I Am Frankie.
Alex Hook’s portrayal of teenage Kat in The Way Home is a brilliant reflection of her skill and dedication to the craft. Her ability to bring emotional depth and nuance to her character resonates with viewers of all ages. Reflecting on her Hallmark journey, Alex’s commitment to connecting with her audience and embracing the challenges of her craft highlights why she stands out in the industry. Alex Hook’s evolving career continues to captivate, making her one to watch in the industry.
