AllOutdoor Review: Benchmade Mini Taggedout – Hunting to Everyday

The origin of Benchmade can be traced back to California in 1979, when Les de Asis, the founder, was inspired to create a better quality knife than those he had used during his childhood. Dissatisfied with the poorly made butterfly knives available at the time, Les aimed to leverage the latest materials and manufacturing techniques to revolutionize this market. The initial focus was on crafting high-quality butterfly knives, known as Bali-Songs, as reflected in the company’s logo and name at the time. Using his skills from high school shop classes, Les developed a prototype of his improved knife design. Encouraged by the positive response he received from a local gun store owner who saw the prototype, Les embarked on the journey of creating more knives. This marked the humble beginnings of the company, which initially operated under the name Bali-Song. So, today we are going to take a look at the Benchmade Mini Taggedout, a hunting-focused blade with weight in mind.

The Mini Taggedout was provided by Benchmade and while I am allowed to keep these knives indefinitely, it will not change my current or future opinion on any Benchmade Products. Benchmade has not been allowed to preview this review prior to publishing. I have been using this knife every day for the past month. It has been fulfilling EDC roles very well and it is currently my go-to knife if I want something to clip into my pocket and then kinda forget it’s even there until I need it.

At first glance, the Taggout Mini impresses with its sleek, minimalist design. It features a blade crafted from premium CPM-S45VN  stainless steel, renowned for its edge retention and corrosion resistance. The blade measures 2.91 inches, striking a balance between utility and legal carry limits in many states. The drop-point blade shape enhances versatility, enabling the knife to handle a wide array of cutting tasks with ease.

The handle of the Taggout Mini is constructed from lightweight yet robust G10 composite material. Known for its durability and excellent grip, G10 ensures a secure hold even in challenging conditions. The handle ergonomics are well-thought-out, offering a comfortable grip that facilitates precise control during use. The overall construction exudes solidity, with Benchmade’s hallmark attention to detail evident in every aspect of the knife’s assembly. This my be the smoothest opening knife I have yet to own from Banchmade.

In practical terms, the Taggout Mini excels across various everyday scenarios. Whether used for cutting packages, preparing food, or tackling more demanding outdoor tasks, its razor-sharp blade maintains its edge admirably. CPM-S45VN steel proves its worth by retaining sharpness through extended use, reducing the frequency of sharpening sessions compared to knives with lesser materials.

The easy opening action in combination with the thumb studs and Benchmade’s AXIS lock system, enhances ease of use and safety. Opening the knife is swift and straightforward, allowing for quick deployment with either hand. The AXIS lock mechanism, a hallmark of Benchmade knives, ensures the blade remains securely locked in both the open and closed positions, providing peace of mind during use.
