I love IJ-Hallen. As a resident of Amsterdam, I’ve experienced the excitement and buzz of the IJ-Hallen firsthand.

Nestled in the heart of one of the most densely populated areas of the Netherlands, the IJ-Hallen is truly a unique gem. This massive flea market, considered the largest in Europe, perfectly balances supply and demand, giving visitors the best chances of finding exactly what they want.

Making your way to the IJ-Hallen is easy – take the free ferry service 906 from behind Amsterdam Central Station towards the NDSM yard, and within a five-minute walk from the ferry stop, you’ll arrive at the bustling market. Every month, the IJ-Hallenhosts thousands of visitors and vendors, making it a must-visit destination for anyone interested in a memorable shopping experience.

IJ-Hallen is located at the NDSM Wharf in Amsterdam-Noord, a creative and artsy area that has become a hub for artists and entrepreneurs. The flea market is open monthly on weekends from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

It’s easily accessible from various parts of Amsterdam and is only a short distance from Central Station. The ferry ride is free and fast, which I find very convenient. Once in the yard, it is hard to miss the creative vibe of the various art projects, studios, and exhibitions nearby.

How Can I Reach IJ-Hallen From Central Station By Ferry?

I regularly visit IJ-Hallen, and the easiest way to get there from Amsterdam Centraal Station is by taking the free ferry service. To do this, head to the rear side of the train at Amsterdam Centraal Station and look for the ferry stop. Here, you will find ferry service 906 going towards NDSM-Werf.

The ferry ride only takes about 15 minutes and allows you to enjoy the Amsterdam skyline as you cross the IJ River. Ferries run every half hour, so there’s no need to worry about waiting too long.

Once you arrive at the NDSM Wharf, it’s just a five-minute walk to IJ-Hallen. The area is well-marked, and you can easily follow the signs or ask locals for directions. The NDSM Wharf is an interesting place to explore, with its creative spaces, street art, and unique architecture. It’s worth taking some time to walk around before or after your visit to the market.

At IJ-Hallen, you’ll experience the largest flea market in Amsterdam. The vast selection of items, ranging from vintage clothing to antiques, handmade goods, and irresistible street food, makes it easy for everyone to search for a souvenir they’ll love. The atmosphere is lively and a great way to spend a day in the city.

The Real Market Experience

As a new-ish resident of Amsterdam, I have had the pleasure of visiting IJ-Hallen many times, with visits becoming part of the family routine. The market is one of the best flea markets in Europe by far.

There are dozens and dozens of vendors both inside NDSM and outside. It’s a joyful experience with vendors playing music, stirring up conversation, and you’ll be immersed with locals and tourists worldwide.

When planning your trip to IJ-Hallen, remember that the market is held approximately once a month. Check their official website for specific dates and times each month.

Once you arrive, be prepared to spend a few hours browsing through a vast array of vintage and second-hand items. A comfortable pair of shoes is essential, as you’ll walk and stand for an extended period. Dressing in layers is a good idea as Amsterdam’s weather can sometimes be unpredictable.

Don’t be afraid to haggle! Normally, this is one of those tired, stereotypical, hardcore traveler tips I think is rubbish (pay people, for goodness sake!). Still, vendors at IJ-Hallen are fairly open to negotiating prices, so don’t hesitate to make a fair offer on that unique treasure you’ve discovered. As a local, I can attest that bargaining is part of the fun and can make your visit to this iconic Amsterdam flea market more memorable.

The IJ-Hallen market offers a fantastic shopping experience. With easy access to North Amsterdam, it’s a must-visit destination for anyone living in or visiting Amsterdam. Since you’re making the trip, it’s another great excuse to explore the range of things to do in North Amsterdam, like the STRAAT Museum, A’DAM Tower, and the excellent craft breweries of Amsterdam. We love Oedipus Brewing – we still have questions about the name, but the beer is excellent.

Do I Need Cash at IJ-Hallen?

In my experience, bringing cash with you when visiting IJ-Hallen is a good idea. Although some vendors may accept cards or mobile payments, most transactions are still cash-based.

ATMs are typically available on-site, but I recommend arriving with enough euros in your pocket to avoid waiting in line or running out of cash. It’s also worth noting that the entry fee for a standard adult visitor is 6 euros, with early entry costing 10 euros. You can purchase tickets at the entrance.

Can I Become a Vendor at IJ-Hallen?

IJ-Hallen is an incredible place for buyers and sellers alike. With over 750 stalls within two warehouses, IJ-Hallen offers a diverse range of second-hand items, including vintage clothes, antiques, records, furniture, and much more. A friend of mine found it pretty easy to become a vendor in this eclectic market by registering online and paying a small fee for the space.

Is There Any Food or Drink at IJ-Hallen?

Yes, and as someone who spends hours wandering this place, I appreciate the availability of food and drinks. As you walk around browsing for your perfect bargain, you’ll find a variety of food stalls offering diverse culinary treats. In my experience, the many food stalls and drinks available at IJ-Hallen perfectly complement the amazing atmosphere of this unique flea market.

The NDSM-Yard

Living so close by, I often visit the NDSM Yard situated at T.T. Neveritaweg in Amsterdam-Noord. The area is not just an industrial harbor but also a lively cultural hotspot that I enjoy exploring.

Beyond the flea market, the NDSM-Yard also hosts numerous art events and festivals throughout the year, like concerts, fashion shows, and food truck gatherings. One of my favorite museums in Amsterdam is the STRAAT Museum (or Street Museum), featuring eclectic hanging banners of street art in a warehouse setting.

These events, together with the street art and graffiti, make the NDSM Yard an inspiring place – a true reflection of Amsterdam’s cultural diversity and creativity.

Entrance and Tickets to IJ-Hallen

I usually start by purchasing entrance tickets online when I plan a visit to the IJ-Hallen flea market. They offer tickets for specific dates; you can check their calendar for available dates. The market operates from 9:00 am to 4:30 p.m. Remember that cancellations are impossible once you purchase an e-ticket. However, you can resell the IJ-Hallen tickets via TicketSwap if you change plans.

Based on my visits to the IJ-Hallen market, the entrance fee is affordable and worth the experience. Toegangskaarten, or entrance tickets, grant access to an incredible market atmosphere where you can explore numerous stands and find unique items and second-hand clothes.

On the day of the market, I always make sure to have my e-ticket ready for scanning at the entrance. Upon entry, you can explore various stands with varying items for sale. If you need to exit the market temporarily and plan to return later, ask for a stamp at the exit. It’s a convenient way to re-enter without any hassle.
