ARC: July U.S. Airfare Prices Proceed Down

The average price in July for a U.S. roundtrip air ticket dropped to $528, a 5 percent decrease both year over year and month over month, according to Airline Reporting Corp.’s monthly report. This is the fourth month in a row with a year-over-year decline.

July U.S. air ticket sales increased 11 percent year over year to nearly $7.6 billion, boosted by a 16 percent gain in U.S. domestic trips, which totaled more than 13.7 million. Overall sales declined 6 percent month over month variance, while domestic trips increased 1 percent.

Total international trips increased 7 percent year over year to more than 8.2 million but declined 5 percent month over month. Passenger trips increased 10 percent year over year to nearly 22 million but were down 2 percent from June levels.

“U.S. air travel demand remains strong as consumers prioritize traveling this summer and into the fall,” ARC chief commercial officer Steve Solomon said in a statement. “While international travel growth has outpaced domestic for much of 2023, July’s results are an encouraging sign for U.S. airlines.”

July electronic miscellaneous document sales, which include fees for such ancillary products as upgraded seats and checked bags, increased 86 percent year over year to nearly $25.3 million and were up 2.9 percent month over month. Ancillary transactions increased 66 percent versus July 2022 to more than 397,100 and were up about 5.3 percent month over month.
