The Jeep Renegade repeats at #2 in Italy.
The Italian new car market rallies back up 19% year-on-year in January to 128,301 registrations, keeping in mind January 2022 was down -19.7% on the year prior. Private sales trail the market at +10% to 79,964 and 61.5% share vs. 66.7% in January 2022, self registrations edge up 2.3% to 11,676, long term leases surge 63.3% to 28,599 and 22% share vs. 16.1% a year ago, short term rentals also soar 44.3% to 1,915 and company sales improve 30.6% to 7,838. Petrol sales climb 15.7% to 34,323 and 26.4% share vs. 27.2% las year, diesel is robust at +20.2% to 24,830 and 19.1% share vs. 19% and LPG rises 32.9% to 13,376. In terms of green vehicles, HEV increase 25.7% to 47,689 and 36.7% share vs. 34.8% in January 2022, this includes 12,606 full hybrids (+16.2%) and 35,083 mild hybrids (+29.5%). PHEV edges up 10.2% to 6,136 and 4.7% share vs. 5.1% and BEV surprisingly fall -8.6% to 3,342 and 2.6% share vs. 3.4% a year ago.
In the brands ranking, Fiat (+11.8%) can’t catch up with its home market but at 14% it scores a higher share than over the Full Year 2022 (13.6%). Volkswagen (+39.9%) impresses at #2 with 8.6% share while Toyota (+21.5%) is also solid in third place with 7.2% of the market. In 4th place, Dacia (+22.4%) climbs to a very strong 6.8% share vs. 5.1% over the Full Year 2022. It topples sister brand Renault (+27.8%) at #5. Audi (+54.5%), Jeep (+45.6%) and Citroen (+34.5%) all post spectacular gains in the remainder of the Top 10 whereas Peugeot (-21.7%) and Ford (-20.9%) both suffer. Further down and in order of sales, Mazda (+163.3%), Alfa Romeo (+155.9%), MG (+423.3%), Cupra (+124.7%), Lynk & Co (+119%), Tesla (+918.8%) and Maserati (+208.6%) stand out.
Model-wise, the Fiat Panda (+12.9%) easily retains the top spot with 8.3% of the market, a smidge above its Full Year 2022 level of 8%. The Jeep Renegade (+104.7%) repeats at a splendid 2nd place with 3.4% share vs. 2.3% over FY2022. The Dacia Sandero (+2.1%) is up two spots on December to land on the third step of the podium, distancing the Fiat 500 (+58.6%) rallying back up 19 ranks on last month to #4. The Lancia Ypsilon (+9.7%) is knocked down to #5 ahead of the Dacia Duster (+47%) up five spots to #6. The VW T-Roc (+218.7%), Renault Captur (+86.2%) and Toyota Yaris (+32.4%) also shine in the remainder of the Top 10. Below, the Alfa Romeo Tonale advances to a record #32, the Dacia Jogger scores a second ever Top 50 finish at #35 while the MG ZS manages a third Top 50 placing in the past four months at #50.
