Audi sales are up 34% YoY in April.
Swiss new car sales soar 16% year-on-year in April to 18,149 units, leading to a year-to-date tally up 10.1% to 76,968. This month’s performance is to be put in context as April 2022 was down a harsh -29.1% on the year prior. 4×4 sales are up 25.5% to 9,473 and 52.2% share vs. 48.2% a year ago and gain 14% year-to-date to 38,859 and 50.5% share vs. 48.8% over the same period in 2022. Petrol sales edge up 8.4% to 6,617 for the month and are up 5.3% year-to-date to 28,119, diesel sinks -15.9% to 1,648 and -13.4% year-to-date to 7,229, HEVs are up 20.5% in April to 5,061 and 27.9% share vs. 26.8% a year ago and up 21.3% YTD to 21,304 and 27.7% share vs. 25.1%. PHEVs trail the market at +12.9% to 1,443 and up 5.9% YTD to 6,648. Finally BEVs surge 61.6% in April to 3,375 and 18.6% share vs. 13.3% in the same month last year and are up 24.9% YTD to 13,625 and 17.7% share vs. 15.6% in 2022.
Volkswagen (+18%) keeps the brands lead with 9.9% share but is threatened by Audi (+34%) ending the month just 79 units below. Audi snaps the #3 spot year-to-date as a result. Mercedes (+18.7%) is knocked down to #3 but stays #2 so far this year, while Skoda (+59.3%) is up one rank on last month to #4. BMW (-8%) is in a bad way this month. Ford (+30.7%) and Renault (+27.3%) also outpace the market below while Seat (+16.2%) follows it and returns inside the Top 10 at #10. Tesla (+654%) confirms it is in the process of cancelling its end-of-quarter backloaded sales and ranks #13 vs. #14 year-to-date, with Alfa Romeo (+112.3%), Cupra (+65.4%), Jeep (+49%), Mitsubishi (+42.6%) and Porsche (+33.9%) making waves below.
Model-wise, the Audi Q3 (+29%) scores a third win in the past 13 months (add April and May 2022) and now ranks #2 year-to-date. A 2.2% share is enough for the Q3 to rank #1, making Switzerland the most fragmented market in the world. The BMW X1 (+68.1%) repeats at #2 with 1.9% share ahead of the Skoda Enyaq (+288.6%) up 20 spots on March and the Skoda Octavia (+47.6%) up one. In fact, strikingly the entire Top 14 models outpace the market: the Audi Q4 (+563%) is the most dynamic above the Tesla Model Y (+456.4%) keeping its YTD crown, the VW Tiguan (+116.8%), Skoda Karoq (+60.2%), VW Polo (+58.5%), Fiat 500 (+29.2%), Audi A3 (+20.8%) and Cupra Formentor (+19.3%).
