The big quake was initially reported the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) as a 6.9 earthquake while the USGS had an preliminary report of 7.1 both of which have since been revised upwards.
The EMSC issued the tsunami warning.
According to posts on twitter, people are rushing to evacuate for fear of the tsunami.
A post by Ready Alerts stated: If you are near coastal areas, move to higher ground immediately!
The giant trembler occurred today, April 24, 2023, at 20:00:55 Universal Time (UTC).
From the epicenter, the earthquake’s distance to nearby areas was:
• 170.4 km (105.6 mi) SSE of Teluk Dalam, Indonesia
• 177.5 km (110.0 mi) W of Pariaman, Indonesia
• 203.5 km (126.2 mi) W of Padang, Indonesia
• 211.0 km (130.8 mi) WSW of Bukittinggi, Indonesia
• 236.3 km (146.5 mi) W of Solok, Indonesia
The quake was at a depth of 20 km (12.43 miles).
The quake triggered a tsunami warning, the country’s meteorological department added.
Indonesia straddles the “Pacific Ring of Fire,” a highly active quake region.
So far there have been no reports of damages or injuries.
