A significant run of Black Diamond Recon LT avalanche transceivers must undergo a required firmware update, Black Diamond announced.

The need for the update sprang from an issue in which the transceivers may “unexpectedly enter search mode,” despite the rotary switch remaining in the “send” position. The finding resulted in today’s voluntary recall.

Recon LT users can solve the issue by updating their firmware to version v1.3 or later, Black Diamond said. First, they should immediately stop using their device, and follow one of the options below:

The voluntary recall affects all Recon LT avalanche transceivers manufactured and sold between May 2021 and March 2023, with serial digit numbers beginning between the range of 2119-2239. You can find a Recon LT’s serial number by connecting the beacon to the PIEPS app via Bluetooth. The units retail for $350.

Black Diamond sold the transceiver as a standalone unit and as part of an avalanche safety set. For lists of affected products, frequently asked questions, and more, visit the Black Diamond Recon LT recall page.
