BMW quietly confirms an entry-level XM

BMW officially announced pricing today for the flagship Label Red variant of its new XM high-performance SUV, but it also quietly previewed a new base model.

The BMW XM 50e was revealed in a video on BMW M’s official YouTube channel, but the company released precious little information on it.

It’ll offer 76-84km of electric range on the stricter WLTP cycle, slightly less than the 82-88km claim of the standard XM, with WLTP fuel combined cycle fuel consumption of 1.4-1.5L/100km.

It’ll also be offered in more than 50 BMW Individual paint finishes. Other than this info, we don’t know anything more about the XM 50e.

BMW Australia hasn’t confirmed if it’ll join the standard XM and new Label Red and Label Red Edition in the local line-up.

The preview clip of the 50e shows more of the model than the car itself, but we can see it’s finished in what looks like Sao Paulo Yellow with black wheels and a black side stripe.

We can also see yellow accents inside the cabin.

Overseas reports suggest it could drop the twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 plug-in hybrid powertrain found in other XMs in favour of an inline-six plug-in hybrid.

The BMW M760e’s 3.0-litre twin-turbo inline-six plug-in hybrid powertrain seems a likely choice. Replacing the V12 powertrain of the previous 7 Series, it produces up to 420kW of power and 800Nm of torque.

For context, the standard XM has total system outputs of 480kW and 800Nm. It’s priced at $297,900 before on-road costs.

The XM goes on sale in Australia in the first half of this year, with the Label Red and limited-run Label Red Edition following in the fourth quarter.

The Label Red models feature a more powerful twin-turbo V8 PHEV powertrain, bumping outputs to 550kW and 1000Nm.
