Ryland Bastone knows fishing brings people together, and he’s making it easier by hosting an all-kids ice-fishing derby on Bright Lake on Feb. 18.
The 12-year-old Huron Shores entrepreneur had a bad experience with trolls during a previous online derby, prompting him to create the equal-opportunity, free, in-person event for kids.
“The fishing people came together to make (me) feel better about fishing, and I want every kid to feel that way,” Ry wrote. “I said to my mom and dad why don’t we do a fishing derby for kids!”
Children ages two to 16 are welcome to attend. A dinner at the Iron Bridge Recreation Centre provided by the Métis Nation of Ontario is to follow the outside event. There are prizes available for largest fish, mystery fish, largest perch, as well as bonus goodies for every child on hand.
Folks can get involved through “donations, volunteering to help with kid with or without equipment, helping the Métis with dinner, and sharing our information.”
