Based on data shared with us by our local partner cartube.co.il, new car sales in Israel edge up 0.7% year-on-year in 2023 to 270,023 despite a last Quarter impacted by the war. Hyundai (-1.8%) remains the most popular carmaker in the country but sees its market share thaw slightly from 15.9% to 15.5%. The next two brands also trail the market, with Kia (-14%) at #2 and Toyota (-13.6%) at #3 like last year. BYD (+308.2%) is the success story of the year, up 14 spots to land at a sensational 4th place. Its highest market share was however reached in December 2022 at 8%, with the best in 2023 being 7.2% in September. Skoda (+7.3%) stays at #5 above a freefalling Mazda (-26.6%). Launched in December 2022, Chery (+1132%) surges to a fantastic 7th place for its first full year in market. Geely (+4.6%) is down one spot to #10. Peugeot (+21.3%) and Renault (+21.9%) also impress near the top while Tesla (+11.9%) drops two spots to #12.
2023 has a big winner in the models charts: the BYD Atto 3 (+283.4%) decisively takes control with 5.3% share vs. 3.4% for the #2, a Kia Niro also euphoric (+68.8%). It is only the 2nd crossover to score an annual pole position after the Kia Sportage did so in 2016. The Hyundai Elantra (+42.1%) also shoots up at #3 with the Geely Geometry C (+4.1%) gaining one rank to #4. The Toyota Yaris Cross (+12.8%) does the same at #5 whereas the Kia Picanto (-50.7%), leader in 2022, literally implodes. The Chery Tiggo 8 Pro (+1074.4%) leaps up 93 spots on last year and makes it three Chinese models in the Top 7 vs. just one in 2022. Chinese manufacturers have spectacularly invested the Israeli new car market with great success over the past two years.
