BYD has previewed a new body control system designed specifically for plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles.
It demonstrated the new technology at its Shenzhen headquarters on the upcoming U9 electric supercar from its Yangwang brand.
BYD says the DiSus System is a full stack self-developed system, and there will be three iterations available at first.
According to CNEVPost, DiSus-C, or the Intelligent Damping Body Control System, adjusts the damping of the vehicle by controlling the damper solenoid valve, for ride comfort claimed to be superior to that of vehicles with passive suspension.
DiSuS-A, or the Intelligent Air Body Control System, is similar to traditional air suspension, allowing the vehicle’s ride height to be adjusted by up to 150mm.
Finally, DiSus-P, or the Intelligent Hydraulic Body Control System, can control the oil intake of the damper, damping adjustment valve, and stiffness adjustment valve, while offering travel of up to 200mm.
This system can also lift all four wheels simultaneously, or independently for a single wheel. BYD claims it can provide an instantaneous 200 per cent increase in stiffness during high-speed cornering or other “intense” driving conditions, while also reducing impact load in a collision.
There’s also DiSus-X, which BYD calls the most advanced body control system in the global automotive industry. It demonstrated this technology by driving a Yangwang U9 across the stage with only three wheels.
The company says it has taken the lead in researching vertical motion control, calling the DiSus System the first self-developed intelligent body control system from a Chinese automaker.
It’s claimed to minimise the risk of vehicle rollover and reduce the displacement of occupants during high-speed cornering, emergency braking, and full-throttle acceleration.
BYD also says the DiSus System helps with lateral, longitudinal and vertical motions, and will “provide a foundation for the future development” of advanced driver assistance systems.
The system can also protect a vehicle from damage when driving across a variety of road conditions.
DiSus-C will be rolled out across the BYD Han and Tang line-ups and various Denza models as part of an over-the-air update.
DiSus-A will be offered on the Denza N7 SUV, with DiSus-P to be offered on the Yangwang U8.
BYD has also teased an upcoming brand, which will specialise in “professional and personalised identities”, that will use the DiSus system.
The DiSus system isn’t the only technology BYD has developed in-house.
The company, founded in 1995 as a battery manufacturer, develops and manufactures its own batteries. It also supplies these to other automakers, including Toyota.
