Carriers’ On-Time Efficiency Slumps in June

North American carriers’ average on-top performance in June dropped more than 10 percentage points from May, according to Cirium’s monthly report. June on-time performance was 66.1 percent compared with 78.7 percent in May.

Alaska Airlines at 80.3 percent was the only carrier to report average June on-time performance of at least 80 percent, but it declined from the 84.7 percent the carrier posted in May. For the remaining eight carriers that made Cirium’s list, percentage-point declines ranged from 7.1 percent for United Airlines to 17.7 percent for Air Canada.

Inclement weather during the month, particularly in the New York region, which also is facing a shortage of air traffic controllers, coupled with reduced visibility due to Canadian wildfire smoke likely contributed to the performance declines.

Delta Air Lines at 79.7 percent was the only North American carrier to make the global on-time performance list, at eighth, after it had been second in May.

North American airlines in June canceled 17,414 flights, nearly triple the 6,042 canceled in May.

Alaska had the highest completion factor at 99.8 percent, followed by Southwest Airlines at 99.4 percent.

A flight is considered on time if the aircraft arrives at the gate within 15 minutes of the scheduled arrival time.
