Chery Omoda 5 EV detailed forward of Australian launch

The Chery Omoda 5 EV was quietly revealed at the Shanghai motor show, and now the company’s local arm has confirmed some key specifications.

It’s still set to launch in the first half of 2024, and serve as the relaunched Chinese brand’s rival to models like the MG ZS EV and BYD Atto 3.

The electric version of the Omoda 5 uses a 61kWh battery, with a claimed 450km of range under the WLTP cycle.

It uses a single electric motor producing 150kW of power and 340Nm of torque, good for a 0-100km/h time of 7.8 seconds.

Chery says it will take 35 minutes to charge from 30 to 80 per cent using a DC fast charger, and says the Omoda 5 EV is “V2L ready”.

V2L, or vehicle-to-load, means the battery can be used to charge appliances. It’s a handy feature that isn’t exactly universal in the EV space, though models like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 offer it.

Claimed energy consumption is 15kWh/100km, albeit on the lenient WLTC test cycle.

Dimensions are unchanged from the petrol model. It measures 4400mm long, 1830mm wide, 1588mm tall on a 2630mm wheelbase.

The company has only released a single official image, but Malaysian site PaulTan.org has published images from Shanghai showing the car from almost every angle.

While the front of the EV ditches the intricate grille of the petrol model for a cleaner, closed-off look, the rear is largely the same as the petrol model.

Inside, there are lashings of woodgrain trim and a unique two-tone blue-and-white colourway, while the petrol model’s shifter has been removed.

Before the electric model arrives, Chery will expand the local Omoda 5 range with EX+ and EX+ AWD variants with a turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine and seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission (DCT).

These models will produce 145kW of power and 290Nm of torque, and swap the standard Omoda 5’s torsion-beam rear suspension for a multi-link set-up.

The Omoda 5 went on sale earlier this year in BX and EX guise, powered by a turbo 1.5-litre four with 115kW and 230Nm.

It was the first model launched under the brand’s new factory-backed operation. Chery was last seen here from 2011 to 2014, distributed by Ateco.

The range will expand beyond the Omoda 5 family, with the 4.5m-long Tiggo 7 Pro and 4.74m-long Tiggo 8 Pro due in the second half of this year.

The former is offered in China with a choice of a turbo 1.5-litre four with a CVT or a turbo 1.6-litre four with a DCT, like the Omoda 5, while the latter offers a choice of turbo 1.6-litre or 2.0-litre fours.

Chery Australia has also indicated plug-in hybrid versions of these are coming Down Under.

To the end of April, Chery has already sold 425 Omoda 5s, overtaking other small SUVs like the Mazda MX-30 (238 sales) and Renault Arkana (423 sales) and approaching the likes of the Jeep Compass (507 sales) and Suzuki Vitara (483 sales).
