The boxy Jetour Traveller SUV has been spied on Chinese roads ahead of an expected launch in its domestic market this month.
Chery’s spin-off brand Jetour first revealed the Traveller, formerly known as the T-1, at a media event in China in March and later at the Shanghai motor show in April.
These latest spy photos published by XCar and QQ show a Traveller with a satin exterior paint job and a number of bronze highlights.
This boxy off-roader has styling reminiscent of the GWM Tank 300 and the Land Rover Defender. It even has a side-hinged tailgate.
According to Chinese reports, the Traveller is available with petrol and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrains.
There’s a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with an eight-speed automatic transmission, as well as a plug-in hybrid powertrain consisting a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine and an electric motor.
Power and torque figures for all of these engines are yet to be published.
All versions of the Jetour Traveller will have mechanical four-wheel drive with a differential lock.
Jetour has previously announced its T product series would be available with four- and six-cylinder petrol engines, as well as PHEV and EV options.
At this stage it’s unclear if the Traveller is based on a body-on-frame architecture like the GWM Tank 300, which recently went on sale in Australia.
Jetour recently teased a number of upcoming vehicles during a media event split over three model series called City SUV and Household Travel, Light Off-road and Fun Travel, and Hardcore Off-road and Trendy Travel when translated directly from Chinese to English.
Some of the most notable vehicles in the shadowy line-up teaser include what appears to be the long-wheelbase Traveller called T1L, a ute version of the Traveller called the P-2/P-3, as well as a larger off-roader called the T-2/T-3.
The latter of these vehicles was shown off in concept form at the Shanghai motor show.
In terms of an Australian launch of the Jetour, the brand has made no comment. The five-year-old brand sells products in the Middle East and South America, so clearly has one eye on exports.
Chery’s namesake brand has just relaunched in Australia with the Omoda 5, which is now priced from $32,900 before on-road costs following a recent price rise.
It has huge expansion plans and is targeting over eight per cent of the market in each segment in will compete in.
