Delta to Buy 10M Gallons of Shell SAF

Delta Air Lines has agreed to purchase up to 10 million gallons of neat sustainable aviation fuel over two years from Shell Aviation, the carrier announced Thursday. Neat SAF can be blended with conventional jet fuel and used in today’s aircraft engines. The SAF would be used at Los Angeles International Airport.

The agreement includes testing Avelia, a blockchain-powered digital SAF sourcing solution launched by Shell Aviation and its partners last year “to bring greater transparency to tracking and accounting companies’ carbon footprint from flying,” according to Delta.

This purchase will increase the airline’s SAF commitments to more than 200 million gallons—more than halfway to its goal of SAF comprising 10 percent of its fuel use annually by the end of 2030, according to Delta.

The carrier also announced on March 22 an agreement to purchase roughly 75 million gallons of SAF annually for seven years from Gevo. Deliveries are expected to begin in mid-2026.

In addition, ground support equipment at Delta’s hubs in Salt Lake City and Boston are nearly entirely powered with electricity, the carrier also announced Thursday. The transition reflects Delta’s more than $385 million investment in electrified ground service equipment and airport charging infrastructure between 2020 and 2024, according to the carrier.
