DIY Physique Scrub With Espresso Grounds

Today we’re talking about one of our  favorite natural beauty trends: exfoliating with coffee grounds. And this one goes for men and women.

If you keep up with the blog, then you know that here at The Skinny Confidential we have that big exfoliation energy. When it comes to skincare, exfoliation is KEY.

We could talk about the importance of exfoliation all day. Literally. But we’ll let you read more about that here

So, why exfoliate with ground coffee? Here’s the 411.

The sand-like texture of coffee grounds works to gently remove dead skin cells that make your skin look unhealthy. Buh-bye peeling and flaking skin.

Coffee grounds also help rejuvenate the skin and boost blood circulation / blood flow in the same way that dry brushing does. (BTW – if you’re not dry brushing, you should be. More on that here.)

This, in turn, makes coffee grounds scrubs just so good at reducing the appearance of dry skin, cellulite, stretch marks, acne, dark spots, and more.

Coffee beans also contain skin-supporting antioxidants that reduce inflammation and fight free radical damage on the cellular level. These antioxidants are also known to reduce dull and lackluster skin by improving overall complexion.

Making and using a DIY body scrub with coffee grounds also has some non-skincare related benefits.

Honestly, it helps save money by not buying into super expensive body scrubs out there. Which is not to say that all commercial body scrubs are bad. In fact, here’s one we really love: Dr. Dennis Gross Body Peel Pads. (More of Lauryn’s fave skin & beauty products, here.)

And believe it or not, this DIY coffee scrub is environmentally friendly as well, with no toxic chemicals and minimal waste. It’s like a little built-in way to give your used coffee grounds a second use. We just love being efficient.

DIY Body Scrub With Coffee Grounds

Needless to say, this holistic beauty hack is totally worth the hype. Especially when you use your leftover coffee grounds to make a coffee grounds scrub

Because when you’re DIY-ing a scrub, you can add other skin-supporting ingredients as well, making for a perfect little DIY skincare product. Keep in your shower for regular use.

To be honest, you probably already have everything you need in your pantry to whip up an effective coffee grounds scrub.

So without further ado, here’s how to make your own DIY body scrub with coffee grounds:

Ingredients

There are tons of DIY coffee scrub recipes out there, because there really are tons of things you can add to your scrub to give it a little something extra. We’ll get into it in a minute.

For this recipe, we’re going to use coffee grounds and coconut oil as our base. To make a simple coffee grounds scrub – that’s really all you need.

BUT if you’re already going to take the time to make a scrub, you might as well add in some other skin-supporting ingredients as well. Add one or more of these to your coffee grounds scrub to take it to the next level:

Essential:

♡ Organic coffee grounds ( 4 tablespoons )

Coconut oil ( 4 tablespoons )

Optional

honey ( 1 tablespoon )

♡ yogurt ( ¼ – ½ cup )

brown sugar ( 1 tablespoon )

almond oil ( 1 tablespoon )

cinnamon ( 1 teaspoon)

olive oil ( ¼ cup )

♡ banana ( ½, ripe )

epsom salt ( 1 tablespoon )

aloe vera ( 2 tablespoons )

rose water ( 2 tablespoons )

green tea ( 2 tablespoons )

How To Make Coffee Scrub At Home

+ Step 1: Gather ingredients + prep the area.

Grab your coffee grounds, your coconut oil, and any other ingredients you want to add to your scrub.

Since coffee grounds can get a little messy, you might want to prep the area by laying down an old towel. Oh, and make sure you’re not wearing any clothes that you don’t want to possibly stain.

+ Step 2: Mix ingredients in a large mixing bowl.

Add all ingredients into a large mixing bowl and thoroughly mix until you’ve achieved a good scrub consistency. Thick, but not too thick.

You can do this with your hands or with a mixer. Really, how you mix up your ingredients is up to you.

+ Step 3: Scrub in the shower.

Throw your scrub in a cup or coffee mug and hop in the shower. Gently and evenly exfoliate your whole body using circular motions & lukewarm water.

Before you ask, yes – you can even exfoliate your face and lips. Just be gentle.

+ Step 4: Let the mixture sit on your skin for 2-5 minutes.

Allow the scrub to sit on your skin 2-5 minutes to allow all the good stuff to really soak in. This includes the antioxidants we talked about earlier, in addition to other vitamins and minerals and skin-hydrating agents.

+ Step 5: Rinse + complete your after-shower skincare routine.

Rinse thoroughly. After exfoliating, it’s super important to follow up with a good lotion / moisturizer. This will rehydrate and soothe your skin, and promote healthy skin-healing and rejuvenation.

Try this coffee scrub and let us know how it went in the comments.

Also – if you have any other skin-supporting ingredients to add, drop them below too.
