DOT Approves JetBlue, BA Codeshare

The U.S. Department of Transportation on June 7 approved the application of JetBlue and British Airways to engage in reciprocal codeshare services “for an indefinite duration,” according to a DOT filing. The carriers applied for codeshare approval on May 22.

Initially submitted codeshare routes operated by JetBlue that would display the BA code include 39 destinations to and from New York City area airports, and 36 destinations paired with Boston. The British Airways flights submitted to display JetBlue’s code include 17 European destinations to and from London.

“We are pleased with the DOT approval for a bilateral codeshare agreement between JetBlue and British Airways,” JetBlue said in a statement. “We are always looking for new ways to offer our customers more choice when traveling. With the new codeshare, customers will be able to seamlessly book a single ticket for travel on both airlines, providing an expanded network of destinations across Europe and the U.S.”

British Airways also is partnered with American Airlines as part of a transatlantic joint venture, which also includes additional International Airlines Group carriers Iberia and Aer Lingus, as well as Finnair.

The DOT approval comes about a year after a federal judge ordered the dismantling of the Northeast Alliancebetween American and JetBlue.

Neither American nor BA immediately responded to requests for comment.
