After two months of increases, the February flight cancellation rate for the 10 largest U.S. carriers declined year over year, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s latest Air Travel Consumer Report.
Reporting carriers in February canceled 0.6 percent of scheduled domestic flights, which is lower than the 1.8 percent canceled in February 2023 and the 3.8 percent canceled in January 2024.
Carriers in February with the lowest cancellation rates included Allegiant Air (0.1 percent), Frontier Airlines (0.2 percent) and the American Airlines network (0.3 percent). Those with the highest cancellation rates included JetBlue (1.4 percent), Hawaiian Airlines (1.1 percent) and the Alaska Airlines network (1.1 percent). Networks include branded codeshare partners.
U.S. carriers operated nearly 549,500 flights in February, which represents a 4.35 percent increase year over year and 1.95 percent decrease month over month.
For February, carriers handled 36.1 million bags and posted a mishandled baggage rate of 0.48 percent, lower than the rate of 0.75 percent in January 2024 and the rate of 0.61 percent in February 2023.
Data regarding airline service complaints again was not included in the report.
