Queensland Police used a Taser and physical force to detain an allegedly drunk driver involved in a three-vehicle crash in Brisbane yesterday afternoon.
A bystander captured the altercation on video.
Witnesses allege the driver of the Nissan X-Trail was holding a wine bottle.
The video starts once emergency services have arrived at the scene where the Nissan X-Trail crossed a median strip into oncoming traffic and collided with a Ford Ranger.
A police officer can be seen using physical force to detain the driver, appearing to repeatedly punch the driver before a nearby firefighter steps in to stop the altercation.
In the video, distressed onlookers can be heard yelling at the police officer to stop and saying “you can’t do that”.
After a short while, the driver attempts to make his way out of the vehicle before the police officer uses a Taser to attempt to detain the individual.
Queensland Police late last night released a statement regarding the incident.
“At 1:45pm, a police officer was responding to the crash at the intersection of Gympie and Samsonvale roads when he was confronted by a highly agitated male driver inside a vehicle,” the statement reads.
“Police will allege the man was drinking from a wine bottle and was under the influence of the substance. After the officer attempted to take the bottle away several times, it was allegedly thrown towards him.
“After giving numerous directions for the man to remain in the car, it will be alleged he continued to attempt to leave the vehicle by kicking the door into the officer, who used physical force to contain the man in the vehicle.
“The man continued to attempt to leave the car and after several verbal warnings, a Taser was deployed by police.
“He was then taken in custody and transported by ambulance to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s hospital for treatment to minor cuts, where he remains. “
The man was arrested, however the charges laid against the individual are yet to be announced.
Queensland Police will rely on body camera footage of the incident and say investigations are still ongoing into the incident.
