Electrical Jeep Wrangler and Grand Cherokee confirmed

Details about updates and new generation for the Jeep Wrangler and Grand Cherokee, as well as whole host of other products from Stellantis North America, have been detailed.

These interesting nuggets of information were released by the United Auto Workers (UAW) union to tout its new deal with Stellantis North America, which was struck after a rolling multi-week “stand up” strike affecting Ford, GM and Stellantis.

Members of the union recently voted to ratify the new deal that includes 25 per cent pay increases, cost-of-living adjustments, greater access to profit sharing, converting part-time to full-time employees, and a quicker transition to higher pay bands.

The flier released by the UAW focuses primarily on new commitments to products, so some confirmed vehicles, such as the upcoming Dodge Charger Daytona EV, Jeep Recon EV, and Jeep Wagoneer S EV, are not mentioned.

Interestingly there are no details regarding Chrysler’s last remaining product, the Pacifica people mover, or the previously revealed but now being reworked Airflow crossover.

Jeep

The big news for off-roading enthusiasts is that Jeep is planning a new generation of the Wrangler that’s set to go into production from 2028. The new Wrangler will be available with both pure electric and range-extender electric drivetrains.

Prior to this, the Wrangler SUV and the related Gladiator ute will gain an updated plug-in hybrid drivetrain in 2025.

While the Wrangler will definitely be gaining a new generation, there’s no mention of a second-generation Gladiator. Given its slow sales, it’s possible it won’t be renewed.

The Ram 1500-based Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer range will continue until 2028 at least. The full-size Chevrolet Suburban competitor are scheduled for facelifts in 2025 and 2027.

In 2025 the Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer will gain a range-extender electric drivetrain option, with a pure electric variant due to arrive in 2027.

Both the range extender and EV options for the Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer use the new STLA Frame architecture. As this mirrors the situation the all-electric Ram 1500 REV and range-extender Ram 1500 Ramcharger, it’s likely the pickup and SUV will have the same drivetrains.

The documents confirm the two-row Grand Cherokee will remain in production until 2027, when it will be replaced by a new model featuring both petrol and all-electric drivetrains. The current Grand Cherokee is available with petrol engines, as well as a plug-in hybrid system.

Both the short and long wheelbase Grand Cherokee variants will be given a facelift in 2024.

The longer three-row Grand Cherokee will continue to be produced until 2028, but there’s no confirmation of a replacement.

Ram

Stellantis idled its Belvidere plant, about 45 minutes outside of Chicago, in February 2023 when it stopped production of the Jeep Cherokee.

The agreement will see the factory come back to life to produce a range of “mid-size [pickup] trucks” starting in 2027. The company estimates it will produce around 80,000 to 100,000 of these cars per year at the facility.

Also listed in the union document is an updated Ram 1500 due in 2024, which will see the introduction of all-electric EV and range-extended Ramcharger variants.

Dodge

The UAW flier confirms the current Dodge Durango, a seven-seat crossover based on the previous generation Jeep Grand Cherokee, will continue until 2025.

Launched in 2011, the third-generation Durango will be 14 years old when it is finally retired; a long in the modern age when models are routinely replaced every seven years or so.

A successor to the Durango will commence production in 2026, and will feature both petrol and all-electric drivetrains.

Given the new Durango will be made in the same factory as the Jeep Grand Cherokee, it’s more than likely the two will share the same architecture.
