Evaluation: Fairmont Chateau Whistler | Prince of Journey

During a recent ski trip, I had the pleasure of staying at one of the more luxurious hotel options in Whistler, the Fairmont Chateau Whistler.

This sprawling and prestigious hotel sits at the base of Blackcomb Mountain, and this would be my first time posting up near Blackcomb after mainly staying around Whistler Village during my previous visits.

Fairmont Chateau Whistler – Booking

Whistler has earned a reputation as a top-tier but very costly destination, ranking amongst one of the most expensive ski destinations in the world.

Accordingly, standard rates at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler – generally regarded as the second-best hotel in the area, behind only the nearby Four Seasons – can be notoriously high during the ski season.

From November until around April, a night’s stay can range anywhere from $500–1,000+ (CAD), whereas during non-peak times, rates fall between $350–450 (CAD).

Fairmont is part of the Accor Live Limitless loyalty program, but it can be challenging to redeem Accor ALL points for free nights at a high value, as the program only allows you to redeem 2,000 points for €40 towards a stay. 

If you’re looking to book at a lower rate, Fairmont often offers chain-wide or property-specific promotions, such as second-, third-, or fourth-night free deals. Additionally, you can keep an eye out for Fairmont’s occasional discounted gift cards sales, as well as Amex Offers at Fairmont properties.

In my case, I booked this stay using a favourable travel agent rate, and I leveraged the ongoing Amex Offer for some more savings.

Fairmont Chateau Whistler – Location

The Fairmont Chateau Whistler is located at the base of Blackcomb Mountain, on the eastern edge of Whistler Village.

It’s a 10-minute walk over to the heart of Whistler Village, where most of Whistler’s shops and restaurants are found along the cobblestone streets. However, the immediate surroundings of the Fairmont Chateau Whistler still offer some shops, restaurants, and cafés of their own.

The Blackcomb Gondola is just steps from the Fairmont, and takes less than a five-minute walk to reach. This is one of the main draws of the hotel, as it allows skiers and riders to conveniently carry their gear over directly from the hotel, and giving them a major advantage for first tracks in the morning.

Furthermore, you can ski directly to the entrance of the Mallard Lounge and Terrace, one of Fairmont’s on-site dining venues, making it a true ski-in, ski-out hotel.

A free shuttle bus stops at the foot of the hotel driveway to bring guests to and from Whistler Village, or heading to the nearby golf course if you’re visiting during the summer season.

Lastly, for those flying into BC, the Fairmont Chateau Whistler is a scenic two hours from Vancouver International Airport along the Sea-to-Sky Highway.

Fairmont Chateau Whistler – Check-in

The Fairmont Chateau Whistler is hard to miss. Its stately presence stands out amidst the surrounding forest of snow-capped trees at the base of Blackcomb Mountain.

Upon arrival, we were warmly welcomed by the friendly staff at the front door, who assisted with our bags and delivered them to the room. If you have any ski gear with you, they’ll also take your equipment to the storage area on your behalf.

There’s also a series of entrances from the public areas near Blackcomb Gondola, which is where you’d access the hotel when heading up and down the mountain.

The hotel boasts a spacious lobby decorated with rustic wood and stone elements. Artwork of the surrounding mountains and wildlife are depicted on the wall, and comfortable, chalet-style seating is dotted around.

At the time of this stay, the lobby was lit up with festive holiday décor for an even cozier feel.

The check-in desks are situated to the right as you enter, and the associates quickly welcomed me as an Accor Gold member.

To my delight, I was informed of an upgrade from the base-level room to the Deluxe Slopeside View Room on the 10th floor, thanks to my Accor Gold status.

Unfortunately, Accor Gold members are not entitled to complimentary breakfast, but I appreciated receiving a couple of drink vouchers as a status benefit.

With that, the check-in associate directed us to the elevator lobby, from which we made our way upstairs to Room 1044 on the 10th floor.

Fairmont Chateau Whistler – Deluxe Slopeside View Room

The Deluxe Slopeside View Room has a straightforward layout and is tastefully embellished with rustic accents that make it feel like your own little personal chalet overlooking the ski hill.

Upon entering, you’ll be greeted by the king bed as the centrepiece, complete with a large live-wood headboard.

On the opposite wall to the kind bed is a lengthy armoire. Atop is a Nespresso, and quite a luxurious one at that. Above the armoire is a wall-mounted flat-screen TV.

Nestled into the right-hand corner is a cozy seating area, fit with a chaise longue, armchair, and glass table.

On the table was a welcome gift in the form of fruit, sparkling water, and gourmet chocolate from the Fraser Valley, as well as Blackbear dark chocolate made in Whistler.

A secondary armchair is tucked into the left-hand corner, with a set of decorative antlers hanging on the wall above.

Moving into the bathroom, the space is small but functional, with a lengthy single vanity to the right and a walk-in shower to the left. The shower’s water pressure was excellent, which is a much-needed feature after a hard day on the slopes.

Furthermore, the Le Labo toiletries and plush bathrobes provided by Fairmont always add a luxurious and welcoming touch.

Overall, the Deluxe Slopeside View Room was a well-appointed abode with impressive views of Blackcomb Mountain. In our case, the room was situated on the hotel’s uppermost floor, offering a sloped ceiling that heightened its charm.

I appreciated the warm and inviting décor of the room; while not overly extravagant, it felt very much like a private chalet, and was a perfect spot to cozy up after a long day on the slopes.

Fairmont Chateau Whistler – Breakfast

The Fairmont Chateau Whistler has several dining venues on-site. Breakfast wasn’t included in our rate, but we ventured down to the Wildflower Grill Room to check out the breakfast offering.

Breakfast runs from 7–10:30am on weekdays, and then 7–11am on weekends with both a buffet and an à la carte menu. We opted for the latter, but I still snuck in a few photos of the buffet selection.

You can find an array of the usual suspects, including an array of pastries, as well as fruit, cured meats, and cheese.

There’s a salad bar and juice station for those looking for a lighter start to the day.

For something more filling, the buffet offers a made-to-order omelette station and all the classic breakfast staples, including bacon, sausage, scrambled eggs, roasted potatoes, and even eggs Benedict.

Lastly, for those with a sweet tooth, waffles, pancakes, and French toast are available.

From the à la carte menu, I opted for the southwest skillet, while my partner Jessy decided on a traditional eggs Benedict with two glasses of freshly squeezed orange juice to kick off our day.

Fairmont Chateau Whistler – Dining

When it comes to other dining venues at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler, there is a total of four in-house restaurants.

We stopped by the Portobello for brunch one day, located down a set of steps from the lobby of the hotel. There’s also an entrance accessible from the exterior of the property.

The restaurant has a casual setting, with made-to-order BBQ sandwiches and local craft beers on tap at the Watering Hole, the restaurant’s bar. We opted for sandwiches from the lunch menu with a side of mac and cheese, and both our dishes were incredibly tasty.

The Grill Room is accessible through the Wildflower. Here, you’ll find steak and seafood and a selection of red wines. The restaurant offers a classy and sophisticated setting, ideal for an evening out with friends or a romantic dinner.

Lastly, we popped by the Mallard Lounge and Terrace, where we redeemed the drink vouchers we were given as Accor Gold members.

This is a popular spot that looks out over the base of Blackcomb Mountain, with prices to match. Drinks were as much as $34 (CAD) per cocktail, so this was great value and an awesome way to spend our evening and bring our winter ski getaway to a close.

Fairmont Chateau Whistler – Other Facilities

A major highlight here at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler is its excellent fitness and relaxation facilities.

The Health Club is located on the ground floor down the hallway past the Mallard Lounge and Bar. The club features a fitness centre, eucalyptus steam rooms, a sauna, hot tubs, and a heated lap pool.

The fitness centre overlooks the outdoor pool area. It’s well-equipped with cardio equipment, including treadmills, ellipticals, and bikes, as well as weight machines and free weights.

The pools are divided into an indoor and outdoor area. The heated lap pool is outdoors, and then a secondary pool is also mostly outdoors, but connects to the inside area so you can choose whether you prefer the scenic views from the outdoor pool or the comfort of being inside.

Completing the spa-like area are three outdoor and one indoor hot tubs, a dry sauna accessible from the outdoor area, and then two eucalyptus steam rooms.

The pool facilities are indeed striking, with snow-capped mountains as the backdrop, bright red chairs dotted around a warm fire pit, and tall pine trees surrounding the area. Additionally, there’s a bar that opens here in the evening for poolside drinks.

Conveniently, the Fairmont Chateau Whistler offers ski valet services on site, including a dedicated tent at the base of Blackcomb Mountain with hot cocoa and fireside seating.

You can also find the VIDA Spa and numerous gift shops and clothing boutiques located within the hallways of the Fairmont itself.

Conclusion

The Fairmont Chateau Whistler is a luxurious haven at the base of Blackcomb Mountain, offering a modern alpine setting and a prime location immediately next to the gondolas.

Our stay in the Deluxe Slopeside View Room offered cozy living quarters with breathtaking mountain views, from which we delighted in watching skiers glide down the slopes. The overall décor of the Fairmont Chateau Whistler embodies the essence of a ski chalet, making it feel like your own personal mountain retreat.

The hotel’s selection of dining options is impressive, with the Wildflower Grill Room and Mallard Bar and Lounge among the standout venues. Furthermore, the Health Club offers a combination of stunning poolside mountain views with the soothing hot tubs to rejuvenate between runs.

Overall, the Fairmont Chateau Whistler is an excellent hotel in Whistler, and I’d certainly recommend it to anyone looking for an upscale ski getaway.
