It’s an exceptional year for new light vehicle sales in Turkey. Every single month was at a record level as car buyers rush to purchase a vehicle in a high inflation context, hoping it will rise in value over time. The annual volume passes the million mark for the first time in history at +57.4% to 1,232,635. The previous record was 983,720 in 2016. The Top 4 carmakers are unchanged on last year and all lose share year-on-year. Fiat (+32.2%) is down three percentage points to 15.7%, Renault (+36.1%) down 1.7 to 11%, Ford (+32.2%) down 1.6 to 11% and Volkswagen (+47.1%) down 0.5 to 7.2%. In contrast Peugeot (+140.7%), Opel (+101.1%) and Citroen (+119%) all surge below. Launched in March, Chinese manufacturer Chery ends the year at a superb 11th place, even hitting #5 overall in August and September and 7.1% share in August. The event of the year is arguably the arrival in May of local EV maker Togg. It finishes 2023 at #19 with 1.6% share but peaked at #10 and 3.8% in both November and December.

Model-wise (passenger cars only), the Fiat Egea Sedan (+17.4%) easily retains the pole position but sees its share plummet from 11.6% in 2022 to 8.3% this year. The Renault Clio (+40.8%) also can’t keep up with the market growth but stays #2. The Fiat Egea Cross (+55.8%) is up two spots to #3 ahead of the Renault Megane Sedan (+20.8%) and Toyota Corolla Sedan (-2.2%) both underperforming. The Hyundai i20 (+40.4%) ranks #7 ahead of the Opel Corsa. The Togg T10X lands directly at #9 with only 8 months of sales and peaked at #3 in December. The Peugeot 3008 rounds out the Top 10. Notice also the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro at #17, the Tiggo 7 Pro at #19, the Omoda 5 at #20, the Citroen C4 X at #22 and the Peugeot 408 at #26, the latter two performing much better than at home in France.

Previous year: Turkey 2022: Fiat (+20.8%), Renault (+22.6%) top market up 6.2%, Fiat Egea scores 6th straight win

Two years ago: Turkey 2021: Toyota (+30.2%), Hyundai (+35%) defy market down -4.6%
