Ford (+16.4%), Chery (+13.5%) stand out in detrimental market – Greatest Promoting Vehicles Weblog

Ford Ranger sales are up 32.2% in August.

New vehicle sales in South Africa skid -3.1% year-on-year in August to 45,679 units, leading to a year-to-date tally up 3.4% to 355,246. Toyota (+9.8%) defies the negative market to remain ultra-dominant in the manufacturers charts with 26.8% share. It distances the VW Group (-10.8%) in difficulty and a solid Suzuki (+4%). Ford (+16.4%) delivers the best performance in the Top 10 while Haval (+1.2%) is the only additional gainer in the remainder of the 10 best-selling manufacturers. In contrast Isuzu (-3.6%) falls slightly faster than the market at #7 but Renault (-25.5%), Kia (-23.8%), Hyundai (-15.7%) and Nissan (-10.1%) all disappoint. Below, notice Chery up 13.5% year-on-year but down one spot on July to #11. Jaguar Land Rover (+152.6%) and Honda (+67.7%) also impress further down.

Model-wise, the Toyota Hilux (-3.2%) is the best-seller once again with an imposing 7.2% share and despite a year-on-year loss. The VW Polo Vivo (+3.9%) ranks 2nd ahead of the Ford Ranger (+32.2%) pushed up by the new generation. The Toyota Corolla Cross (+88.7%) soars to 4th place, with the Isuzu D-Max (-8.8%) rounding out the Top 5. The Toyota Hiace (+56.8%) and Starlet (+77.3%) follow while the Suzuki Swift (-1.5%), VW Polo (-10.3%) and Nissan NP200 (-20%) close out the Top 10.
