Genesis giving its BMW X5 rival an influence increase – report

Genesis’ biggest SUV is reportedly getting a new range-topping mild-hybrid powertrain, among other changes coming with a mid-life update.

The Korean Car Blog reports the facelifted GV80 will get the same 3.5-litre twin-turbocharged V6 as the long-wheelbase version of the flagship G90 sedan, featuring a 48V electric supercharger designed to improve efficiency and responsiveness.

In the G90, the inclusion of this supercharger bumps outputs to 305kW of power and 549Nm of torque from 279kW and 530Nm, the same outputs as seen in the GV80 3.5T.

Genesis will reportedly make some major changes to the GV80 as part of its mid-life update, due to enter production in September 2023.

CarExpert understands the updated SUV range will come to Australia in 2024.

The 3.0-litre turbo-diesel inline-six engine is reportedly getting the axe, but a new coupe SUV body style will join the range and reportedly offer unique suspension tuning.

This new body style was previewed early this year with the GV80 Coupe Concept, and is understood to be coming to Australia, too.

The existing 2.5-litre turbo four-cylinder and 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 engines will reportedly carry over.

Exterior updates to the regular GV80 wagon are expected to include revised lighting elements and new wheel designs.

A spied GV80 coupe SUV prototype has also revealed a new rear bumper design with available quad exhaust outlets, though this could be restricted to that particular body style.

The Korean Car Blog reports the GV80 will gain a new 27-inch OLED wraparound display, though this change wasn’t previewed with the GV80 Coupe Concept. As a minimum, we should expect an overhauled infotainment system.

The GV80 was released back in 2020 as the Genesis brand’s first SUV, before being followed by the smaller GV70 and GV60.

To the end of July, Genesis has sold 208 GV80s in Australia this year – less than the stalwart Audi Q7 (1043), BMW X5 (2105) and Mercedes-Benz GLE (1726), but ahead of models like the Jaguar F-Pace (138) and Maserati Levante (66).
