Genesis GV80 luxurious SUV up to date, and it is coming to Australia

Genesis has revealed a rival for the BMW X6, as well as an updated version of its BMW X5 competitor.

The Genesis GV80 range has received a mid-life update and gained a coupe SUV body style, the first such vehicle for the Korean luxury brand.

The brand will launch the updated GV80 range – including the new coupe SUV body style – in Australia during the second quarter of 2024.

The new GV80 Coupe measures 4965mm long, 1975mm wide and 1710mm tall on a 2995mm wheelbase.

That makes it 25mm longer and 5mm lower than the wagon, while luggage space behind the second row shrinks from 735L to 644L.

The GV80 Coupe packs a new 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 with a 48V electric supercharger, producing 309kW of power at 5800rpm and 549Nm of torque between 1300 and 4500rpm.

This powertrain, borrowed from the flagship G90 sedan, will only be offered in the GV80 Coupe.

Genesis says this engine compresses air twice to improve acceleration response at low and medium speeds.

Both the GV80 and GV80 Coupe will also offer the existing 224kW/422Nm turbo 2.5-litre four and 279kW/530Nm twin-turbo 3.5-litre V6. The turbo-diesel inline-six has been retired.

GV80 models continue to offer Preview Electronic Control Suspension, which scans the road ahead and adjusts damping on the fly according to the road surface conditions.

The GV80 Coupe uniquely offers an Active Sound Design mode that “can replicate the sound of a large-displacement sports coupe’s exhaust”. A Flex Brake feature also allows you to customise the responsiveness of the brake pedal.

With the new 3.5T e-S/C powertrain, there’s a Sports+ drive mode, Launch Control, and a display function that shows oil temperature, torque and turbo pressure.

All GV80 models have a refreshed crest grille and headlights, the latter featuring Micro Lens Array technology with cube-like elements as seen on the flagship G90 sedan not sold here.

There’s a restyled front bumper with larger air intakes, though the coupe features a slightly different front end treatment with expanded air intakes and active shutters.

The GV80 Coupe also gets a unique rear bumper treatment with quad exhaust outlets, instead of the concealed ones on the GV80 SUV. A spoiler juts out from below the rear window.

There are new 20- and 22-inch alloy wheel designs across the range, plus even slimmer badges.

Inside, there’s a new 27-inch OLED display that incorporates a digital instrument cluster and infotainment touchscreen.

There’s a redesigned ‘crystal-like’ rotary dial for the transmission, located ahead of the rotary dial for the infotainment system – itself a recent addition, having replaced the old concave dial.

The steering wheel, available in two-tone treatments, has the new, slimmer Genesis emblem, while Genesis says it has also improved the pedal design and crash pads.

The centre stack and centre console have been tweaked, with the larger cupholders losing their cover but a covered compartment now appearing below the climate controls.

Genesis says it has redesigned the wireless smartphone charging tray for “more convenient charging” and improved visibility of the phone.

There’s also now a knob on the centre stack for volume adjustment, while the pedals now have metal accents.

Coupe models also get unique carbon interior garnishes and seats with unique patterns and stitching.

Available features include quad-zone climate control, heated armrests, a fingerprint authentication system, a fragrance system, and a digital rear-view mirror.

Rear-seat passengers can enjoy streaming services on a 14.6-inch rear display, while Genesis has introduced a Bang & Olufsen sound system. Previously, it offered a Lexicon unit.

Genesis says it has deployed an upgraded suite of active safety and driver assist features, which includes second-generation versions of its Lane Following Assist, Remote Smart Parking Assist and Highway Driving Assist.

The GV80 range globally will be offered in the following colours:

  • Uyuni White
  • Savile Silver
  • Makalu Gray (gloss or matte)
  • Vik Black
  • Storr Green (gloss or matte)
  • Capri Blue
  • Mauna Red
  • Barossa Burgundy (gloss or matte)
  • Berring Blue (Coupe only)
  • Matterhorn White matte

There’s a wide range of interior colourways, with available aluminium or wood inlays including:

  • Smoky Green/Earth Brown two-tone
  • Smoky Green/Vanilla Beige two-tone
  • Slate Grey/Bordeaux Brown two-tone
  • Ultramarine Blue/Glacier White two-tone
  • Ultramarine Blue
  • Obsidian Black

Genesis has sold over 170,000 GV80s globally since its introduction in 2020. The fledgling luxury brand overall recently notched more than a million sales since its establishment as an independent brand in November 2015.

The brand recently announced updated pricing and specifications for the GV80 in Australia, confirming it’s axing the entry-level 2.5T powertrain that accounted for around a quarter of sales.
