Despite the rapid development of e-bikes over the last few years, the claimed capability of Specialized’s latest offering is still impressive.

With the Globe Haul ST, the bike company has made an e-bike that can haul 419 pounds up to 60 miles at a time — with pedal assistance along the way. Specialized wants to “bridge the gap between a consumer e-bike and a car,” the company said in a press release. And if the bike lives up to the hype, it might accomplish exactly the commuting goals Specialized has in mind.

It’s also only the inaugural model in a new e-bike lineup for the company. The Globe category of bikes aims for increased load capacity and a versatile accessory mounting system, offering riders the ability to travel — with lots of their stuff — through both suburbs and “outdoor adventures,” the company said.

It officially becomes available for online orders at 9 a.m. PST on March 9.

Specialized Globe Haul ST: Details

The Globe Haul ST uses an aluminum frame equipped with a custom-tuned hub-drive motor that can apparently transport huge loads up to 60 miles.

It offers riders five levels of pedal assistance that will make “event steep climbs completely manageable,” Specialized said. Riders control pedal assist via a handlebar remote, which displays the state of charge, estimated remaining range, and odometer.

The bike’s one-size-fits-all design has a dual-telescoping seat post and adjustable handlebars for accommodating riders from 4’5” to 6’4″ tall. Its step-through frame means getting on or off is easy — even if you’re loaded down with groceries.

The bike’s longevity on the road is likely aided by the extra small, double-wall alloy rims, which measure 20″. Then there are the “quiet and capable” tires, measuring 20″ x 3.5″, called “Carless Whisper Reflect” (Specialized’s marketing team clearly had fun with that one).

To help riders hang plenty of cargo off the frame, the Globe Haul ST offers front and rear pannier adaptors, and a front rack designed for MIK accessories. There are also built-in options for customization and seating configuration. That includes a rear passenger seat, a rear wheel cove, and a plug-in throttle.

“A rack customization kit also provides various hardware to bolt on just about anything to the front,” the company said.

Specialized Globe Haul ST: Pricing & Warranty

The Globe line is backed by a lifetime frame and a 2-year electrical warranty, according to Specialized. It comes in either black or white (er, Satin Obsidian or Gloss White Mountains).

Specialized offers the bike for $2,700 online, where you can also see the complete specs.
