Google Maps getting expanded EV charging data

Google claims it will make driving an electric vehicle (EV) easy with a number of new features for Google Maps.

These new Google Maps features will only be available on Android Automotive-equipped EVs with Google built-in.

At this stage, this includes EVs like the Polestar 2, Volvo C40 and XC40 Recharge, GMC Hummer EV, Renault Megane E-Tech Electric, and Cadillac Lyriq, among others.

The first of the new features Google Maps is receiving is the addition of charger stops to shorter trips.

The company indicates that on any trip requiring a charging stop, Google Maps will suggest the “best stop” based on factors including the current traffic, your charge level, and expected energy consumption.

Google notes if you don’t want to visit the particular station it suggests, you can swap it with another one with “just a few taps”.

The next new feature is a “very fast” charging filter that allows you to search for DC fast-chargers that are capable of 150kW or higher.

This will make it easier to find charging stations that’ll top up your vehicle faster and allow you to get back on the road quicker.

Finally, search results for destinations – for example, if you’re searching for a shopping centre – will display whether there is a charging station on-site.

It’s unclear when Google will start rolling out these new EV-focused features to Android Automotive-equipped EVs with Google built-in at this stage.

It’s also uncertain if it will be available in Australia, as Apple Maps has similar functions but they’re not available locally yet.

As noted in our in-depth explainer story here, Android Automotive has the capability to natively feature apps and services such as Google Maps and Google Assistant in the car, with no connected phone needed.

Having Google built-in also gives you the ability to use Google Assistant to handle in-cabin tasks such as controlling the air-conditioning, in addition to its usual functionality.
