While it’s not a particularly auspicious number, GoPro’s latest model includes several upgrades that will excite longtime fans. Many of the changes won’t be surprising. Like many gadgets aimed at outdoor sports, the new cameras weigh less and offer longer battery life.

But, experienced photographers and content creators will also find several new options for expanding their creativity while filming the outrageous stunts that have long defined the brand.

Though the 8:7 sensor hasn’t changed from the GoPro HERO12, the 13th generation levels up in other ways. It’s got magnetic mounting and charging, but the big draws here are the lenses and additional shooting modes. The new model is compatible with three additional lenses (sold separately). An improved slow-motion mode sounds pretty cool, too.

The GoPro HERO13 Black will cost $400, while the smaller HERO model will set you back $200. They’re available now for preorder and will release on September 10 and September 22, respectively.

Let’s start with the basics. GoPro’s engineers gave the camera’s Enduro Battery a 10% increase in capacity along with enhanced power efficiency, the brand said. Wi-Fi file transfers also get a boost. By incorporating the latest Wi-Fi 6 Technology, content should upload 40% faster.

Magnetic Mounting

There’s also the new Snap and Go Magnetic Latch Mounting system. It combines built-in mounting fingers with 1/4-20 mounting threads, offering three different mounting options.

Like the lenses, you’ll have to buy these accessories separately. That includes the Magnetic Latch ($25) and Ball Joint Mounts ($40). However, these additions are compatible with any existing GoPro mount — so you won’t have to buy a new camera to use them.

These accessories offer a rapid method for transitioning the camera between different mounts, the brand said. The brand incorporates a quick dual-latch system that securely holds the camera in place. A pinch allows for quick release, enabling mount swapping or a 180-degree camera flip to alter the viewing angle.

Lenses

If you opt for the HERO13 Black, you’ll have the option of choosing from several additional lenses to vary the depth of field. Switching them out should be easy, according to the brand. The HERO13 automatically detects each new lens and adjusts its settings accordingly.

The Ultra Wide Lens Mod and Macro Lens Mod are each available for preorder online. GoPro expects them to ship and be available in retail stores starting September 10. The Anamorphic Lens Mod won’t be released until 2025. There’s also an ND Filter 4-Pack for even more creative shooting.

  • Ultra Wide Lens Mod ($100): This lens offers a 177-degree field of view and a new 1:1 aspect ratio. This mod provides versatility in framing, allowing footage to be cropped to either widescreen 16:9 or vertical 9:16, regardless of camera mounting. It also enhances HyperSmooth performance, supporting 360-degree Horizon Lock stabilization up to 4K60 resolution.
  • Macro Lens Mod ($130): The Macro Lens introduces a variable focus capability, allowing focus on distant objects and on items as close as 4.3 inches.
  • Anamorphic Lens Mod ($130): This one captures ultra-wide-angle shots with less distortion, offering a dramatic 21:9 aspect ratio akin to cinematic footage. It features cinematic lens flares and in-camera “de-squeezing” for easier capture and editing of anamorphic content.
  • ND Filter 4-Pack ($70): This pack includes ND4, ND8, ND16, and ND32 filters, enabling cinematic motion blur. Attaching a filter prompts the Hero13 Black to switch to Auto Cinematic video mode, adjusting settings optimally for the environment.

Software

While the HERO12 also had slow motion (8x at 2.7K resolution and 240 frames per second), the HERO13 makes a significant leap forward.

The GoPro HERO13 Black introduces a 13x Burst Slo-Mo mode. It’s capable of capturing up to 400 frames per second at HD-quality 720p, along with 5.3K resolution at 120 frames per second and 900p at 360 frames per second. It’ll be cool to see how that beefed-up slo-mo captures outdoor stunts on skis, bikes, or whatever else.

But there are a few other software updates as well. With Professional-Level Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG) HDR Video, you can adhere to broadcast standards of video. That means 10bit color and Rec. 2100 color space — a wider color range compared to standard HDR.

Finally, the camera comes with enhanced audio customization options. That means users can select between a balanced, “true-to-life” sound profile and a Voice setting that boosts vocal clarity while still capturing ambient background noises.

When you need to travel with a lightweight camera kit for backcountry adventures, the compact HERO is the way to go. Even smaller and lighter than before, the latest model clocks in at just 86 g. Compared to the HERO13 Black, it offers 35% less volume and 46% less mass, GoPro said.

Built with greater durability, it’s waterproof down to 16 feet, according to the brand. The integrated battery supports up to 155 minutes of recording time for 1080p video at 30fps. It can also record 4K video at 30fps, with a 2.7K slow-motion video mode that operates at 60fps.
