GWM Tank 300 receives replace to key security characteristic

GWM Australia has started rolling out a software update to the recently launched Tank 300 off-roader that fixes an issue with its emergency lane keeping (ELK) system.

An owner in the GWM Tank 300 Owners Australia Facebook group who had the ELK software update completed on their vehicle at a dealer in New South Wales claims it has now made the system much less aggressive when triggered.

A number of owners who took delivery of their Tank 300 prior to the software update becoming available found the off-roader’s ELK system would randomly jolt at the steering wheel when nearing a lane marking.

During Paul Maric’s video review he noted the Tank 300’s ELK system was “highly intrusive and quite annoying”, as it “violently shunts you back over” into the lane and sometimes “randomly steers left and right”.

We’ve reached out to GWM Australia to confirm when this update will be rolled out to all Tank 300s, and will update this story once we hear back.

Local deliveries of the petrol-powered GWM Tank 300 range started earlier this year, with the first examples of the hybrid arriving in Australia earlier this month.

The boxy Tank 300 off-roader forms a cut-price rival to the Jeep Wrangler and is positioned in the same price bracket as diesel-powered ute-based 4×4 SUVs including the Ford Everest, Isuzu MU-X and Mitsubishi Pajero Sport.

Unlike those vehicles, it offers the option of a hybrid powertrain.

Pricing for the Tank 300 opens at $46,990 drive-away for the petrol-powered Lux, and extends all the way to $60,990 drive-away for the Ultra Hybrid.

Beyond the Tank 300, it’s understood the larger Toyota Prado-rivalling Tank 500 is set to arrive in Australia in the first quarter of 2024.

GWM has yet to officially confirm the Tank 500 for Australia, though it said it was under “very serious consideration” and that it was working on a business case.

In addition, GWM Australia recently shared a new video on its social media suggesting the Tank 400 plug-in hybrid off-roader could be coming Down Under as well.
