So, to help you get the most out of your trip, I want to share some of the easiest ways and tips to explore France and Switzerland by train, how to get your tickets securely, and what to look for along the way. This way, you can focus on the all-important task of enjoying your trip to mainland Europe.

Now, there are loads of benefits to taking the train from the UK to France or Switzerland.

For me, it’s the ease of leaving the city centre and arriving in a new city centre, right in the heart of my chosen destination. Like, there’s nothing better than getting to your final stop by train and realising you don’t have to take get into the city or travel miles from the airport. It’s such a breeze and perfect if you’re going for a city break.

Travel times between Paris and Switzerland

Not only that, the high-speed rail routes in France make travel really fast. After connecting trains in Paris (which is a breeze, by the way), you can be in a whole new destination in a few hours.

For instance, trains from Paris to Geneva take just over 3 hours. Well, 3 hours 11 minutes to be exact. Not only that, Paris to Zurich takes just 4 hours 4 minutes and Paris to Basel takes 3 hours 4 minutes. Oh, and you even have a direct train from Paris to Lausanne in 3 hours 41 minutes. All the trains are direct and so simple to connect after taking the Eurostar from London.

Now, three to four hours might seem like a big chunk of time, but I promise, it ends up being faster than the plane, especially with travel time to the airports, security, 2-hour check-in and so much more. Plus, you’ve got none of the 100ml hassle with your liquids to deal with at the airport.

Just like planes, there are different ticket types that you can personalise depending on what suits you best. If you’re looking for a streamlined train, with free WiFi, then make sure to book a ‘Standard’ ticket. This is a great way to keep costs down as prices start from 49 euros.

Another ticket option is for ‘Standard Premier’ which includes all the perks of ‘Standard’ but with the added comfort of bigger seats and a taste of first-class luxury. It’s a great option if you want to stretch out and make your journey extra special.

If you want a completely unrestricted ticket, then book a ‘Business Premier’ that starts from 179 euros. This is the best option if you’re unsure of which exact train you’ll take but still want the luxury of first-class travel. Not only that, you’ll even get to choose from onboard meals from Michel Roth.

Oh, and be sure to look out for seasonal promotions that happen throughout the year on the SNCF Connect Website. It’s a great way to take advantage of deals and keep costs lower for your trip.
