How To Make Your Lip Coloration Final Longer

A smooth and sexy lip color can make you stand out in the crowd in all the best ways.

The only thing we love more than a good lip color is one that lasts all day long. Everyone wants their lip color to last longer, especially on those busy days. We don’t always have time for touch ups.

The thing is, getting that perfect, long lasting lip color isn’t as simple as just finding the right products. The way you prep your lips and apply your lipstick is also important.

So, are you pulling out your mirror every hour to retouch? Well, that stops TODAY. Read on for our roundup of tips and recommended products that’ll make your lip color last.

How To Make Your Lip Color Last Longer

Exfoliate.

Dry and flaky lips aren’t a good canvas for long-lasting lip color. So, before applying any sort of lipstick, lip gloss, or lip liner, exfoliate your lips with a gentle lip scrub. To maintain smooth and healthy looking lips, exfoliate them 2-3 times per week. Not big on lip scrubs? We got you. You can always exfoliate by brushing your lips with your toothbrush.

Hydrate.

Soft and supple skin starts with hydration. This is especially true for the lips. To ensure your pout looks as healthy as possible, hydrate on the inside AND the outside. This means drinking plenty of water and applying a lip balm or moisturizer to your lips on a regular basis. Throw some hydrating lip masks in your routine as well.

Prime your lips.

Start by applying a tiny bit of lightweight foundation or concealer to the lips. This will fill in all those crevices and prep your lips for smooth application.

Then, further prime by defining your natural lip shape with a lip liner or a specific lip primer. Always enhance! When you use a good lip liner, you don’t have to stress about color bleeding. You don’t have to stress about matching your lip liner and lip color perfectly. Instead, just choose a nude or translucent lip liner.

Choose a matte lipstick.

Okay, time for a pro tip straight from the most popular makeup artists out there. If you want your lip color to stay sharp all day long, choose a matte lipstick. Especially if you’re going with a red.

Matte lipsticks, including liquid lipsticks, tend to stay put way longer than most soft, creamy lip colors. Here are some of Lauryn’s fav lipstick colors and her vacay picks.

Apply with a brush.

Try using a brush to apply your lip color. Using a brush ensures that the lipstick is evenly spread and that it fills in any cracks and crevices. Plus, with a brush, you’ll get a much more controlled and precise application.

Blot and layer.

Once you’ve applied a nice layer of lip color, it’s time to blot. Grab a thin layer of tissue paper and dab your lips. This will get rid of excess oils and color and enhance the staying power. For extra color enhancement, layer it up – apply another layer of lipstick and blot again.

Set your lips.

Just like you’d set your face after makeup application, you should set your lips after color application. For max staying power, set your lips with a fine, translucent setting powder. When it comes to the lips, we’ve found a powder is much more effective than a spray. This will give you a long wearing lip.

Avoid oily foods.

If you want your lipstick to last all day (or night) for a special event or something similar, you’ll have to do a little more than just use good products and the right technique. You’ll also have to avoid oily foods. The oil from foods can actually break down your makeup and drastically reduce the effectiveness of ALL your lip products.

Use these tips to ensure your lipstick stays put, even after hours.

Next time you need your lipstick to actually stick around for a while, try to incorporate these tips. And when you do, let us know how it goes. Oh, and feel free to drop all your fave products recs and tips for making your lip color last longer below. You always have the best tips.
