How To Revamp Your Closet

We’re loving elevated fashion lately. Lauryn’s own fashion journey has taken a turn to more classic, chic pieces that are intended to really last. So you may have noticed lately on the blog that we’ve talking more about clothes, accessories and closets.

Combining fashion and organization? What could be more satisfying?

Today on the blog we have Lauryn’s stylists, Danielle and Alix. They are MASTERS of their craft and you can tell from their Instagram. In this post they’re going to go over how to organize your closet, little hacks to keep your items in the best condition, the best basics everyone should own, and how to keep things fun with pops of color.

With that, let’s hear from Danielle and Alix.

Hi! We’re Danielle & Alix – NYC & LA based Celebrity Stylists, named FORBES 30U30 in Art and Style. We met while working in Celebrity Relations at a Global PR Agency working across brands like Off—White, Rene Caovilla, Roberto Cavalli, Ermanno Scervino, Hugo Boss, & more. After transitioning into styling, assisting fashion leaders like Gigi & Bella Hadid, Ariana Grande, and Lily Rose Depp, we decided to launch our own business, Danielle & Alix.

We specialize in styling red carpets and events, street style moments, brand campaigns, and wardrobe revamps. Along with working with Lauryn, our roster includes talent such as Lindsay Lohan, Paige Desorbo, and Camille Kostek, to viral social celebrities like Alix Earle, Kensington Tillo and Sophia Culpo, and most recently the Real Housewives of NYC cast.

Specifically with Lauryn, we have been working together to both curate her personal style to reflect her own brand and personality, along with visiting her closet in ATX to revamp and curate what she already owns. Personal style is all about reflecting your goals and aspirations, and it doesn’t require ordering a whole new wardrobe to give your closet a face lift.

Hone in on what your style goals are, so you can create a clear game plan on what holes you need to fill in your wardrobe. Are you trying to elevate your wardrobe? Are you wanting a more mature closet? Who are your style icons? If you can take the time to answer these questions, it will help you to not buy into trends, and refine your style to what feels right for you. We’ve broken down our top 10 tips and tricks from both the physical layout of your closet to the nitty gritty of what’s in your wardrobe for the best formula to revamp your style this summer.

How To Revamp Your Closet

THE CLOSET

MATCHING HANGERS

An easy and quick way to create a sense of organization in your closet is to ensure you have all matching hangers. This will create an overall vibe, and help you visualize your clothing more clearly with a clean canvas. These are our favorites from Amazon – we always suggest velvet hangers to grip the clothing. And our secret hack: use baby hangers for small tanks, tees, and pants to save space & keep everything in place!

HANG! HANG! HANG!

Proven time and time again, if you can’t see it, you won’t wear it. Ideally, after cleaning out your closet, you should create some more space. We encourage you to hang as much as possible – even in Lauryn’s closet, we hung up all of her matching workout sets (for example, this bra + these shorts would be on the same hanger). This is a great space saver and is an easy way to know you have looks pre-planned when crunched for time.

ORGANIZE BY SEASON

If you live somewhere with seasons, or even have specialty pieces for vacation, we’d encourage you to store them separately from your everyday wardrobe. This is of course to save space, and also allow you to clearly visualize the pieces you’re wearing on a more regular basis. Bulky jackets for ski climate or super colorful/patterned vacation-wear can distract the ebb & flow of your closet. We love these storage bags or these clear storage bins, which can then be stored in a garage or storage unit if you don’t have an extra closet in your home.

CATEGORIZE + COLOR COORDINATE

Once everything is on the same hanger & separated by season, it’s time to organize. This is a two-step process. First – group your wardrobe by categories: basic tops/tees, denim/pants, workout/athleisure, dresses/skirts, specialty pieces, etc. Once you create these sections, hang your garments up all facing the same way, left to right (like you are reading a book), light colors to dark, smallest to largest, (for example white tanks, white T-shirts, white long sleeves, white sweaters). You can follow the same steps for folding in a dresser; we typically recommend folding your bras, undergarments, extra workout pieces, and pajamas depending on your space.

MAINTAIN YOUR PIECES

If you’re spending the time and energy to work on your wardrobe, then you should certainly take it one step further and maintain your pieces in the best possible condition. Here are a few tools to do so:

Boot Shapers – you can even use paper stuffing if you want to get creative!

Purse Dividers – the only way to make your purses stay upright – this creates such a clean look in your closet

Purse Pillow Inserts – help to maintain the shape and structure of your purses

Closet Humidity Absorbers – if you live in a humid environment, these are necessary to absorb extra water that would otherwise get into your clothing and cause pilling. Lauryn turned us onto these!

Mr. Clean Magic Erasers – the BEST for cleaning sneakers/shoes

THE WARDROBE

THE FOUNDATION: BASICS

The first place to start when cleaning out your closet is with your basics – this is the foundation of your wardrobe. Start by taking out all your basic tanks + tees, discarding any with pilling, stains, or just overall wear. Less is more in this department; refreshing your basics every season will instantly elevate your wardrobe. Here are a few of our favorites:

Eterne 90s Tank

Eterne Baby Tee

Eterne High Neck Fitted Tank

Enza Costa Cap Sleeve Tee

Gooseberry Rib Crop Tank (a Summer House fav!)

Hanes Ribbed Tank (Hack: order from the boys section for the off-duty supermodel look, a Bella Hadid staple)

Emrata X AG Baby Tee

Hanes Socks & Bra Pack

FIND YOUR EVERYDAY JEAN

Your everyday jeans are arguably the most important piece of clothing in your wardrobe. This is what you pair with your basics, dress up, dress down, wear for every occasion. When revamping your closet, if a jean does not fit just right, it’s not worth holding onto. Our favorite hack to nailing the everyday jean is sourcing a custom pair of vintage denim – you’ll thank us later. Ali Grace and Lenny are our two favorite resources for this service – you can also shop Ali’s pieces on FWRD if you are looking to purchase without the wait; we love the Kelsey Baggy Jean. Parke Denim is also one of our favorite denim brands for the ultimate fit with that vintage feel. The Parke Baggy Straight is chef’s kiss.

3-MONTH RULE

We live our lives under one very strict rule: if you haven’t worn it in three months, its gotta go! This basically boils down to if you haven’t worn an article of clothing (with the exception of it holding sentimental value) in a season, it is not serving you and is taking up space.

UNEXPECTED SHOE THEORY

Another theory we will live by is the unexpected shoe theory. This is where we allow color and pops of patterns into your wardrobe. Your best off keeping your wardrobe primarily basics and neutrals, and integrating an “unexpected shoe” into a look, mixing and matching street wear with heels and dresses with loafers and sneakers – this juxtaposition is what will really set your wardrobe apart. We love investing in quality and designer shoes and bags, pieces you’ll hold onto forever.

ELEVATED ACCESSORIES

You don’t need to have the most jewelry and accessories, but having the right pieces can instantly elevate a look. Just popping in the right pair of gold hoops with your workout outfit can make you look and feel more put together. We recently collaborated with Electric Picks to curate our everyday favorite pieces. Here are a few of our wardrobe non-negotiables when it comes to accessories (spoiler alert – it’s all about the earrings):

Jenny Bird Tome Small Hoops

Jenny Bird Puffy Earrings

Jenny Bird Wide Hinged Hoops

Heaven Mayhem Mini Knot Earrings

Heaven Mayhem Double Knot Earrings

Mega Small Step Earrings

Mega San Marcos Necklace

Electric Picks Harper Necklace (hack – layer the 3mm + 4mm chain)
