Hyundai Australia reaches main milestone

Hyundai has officially sold its two-millionth new vehicle in Australia after 37 years.

The two-millionth vehicle was a new Hyundai Kona small SUV with the 2.0-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine and finished in Atlas White.

The owner of this vehicle, Alexander Seed, had his new Hyundai Kona delivered in Western Australia by Morley Hyundai.

The two-million local sales milestone follows 11 years after Hyundai celebrated reaching one-million sales in Australia.

This one-millionth car sold by Hyundai Australia was sold by John Hughes Hyundai in Western Australia, which was also the dealer that sold the first Hyundai vehicle in Australia.

Western Australia has always played a “critical role” in Hyundai’s Australian history.

The company started its Australian operation with a single dealer in Perth in 1986. It initially only sold one model, the Excel hatchback.

Hyundai Motor Company Australia was founded in 2003 as a wholly owned subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Company.

As it currently stands Hyundai Australia has a nationwide network of 163 dealers.

Until the end of November this year, Hyundai is the fifth top-selling brand in Australia with 70,296 vehicles sold.

The Hyundai Tucson mid-size SUV has pipped the i30 as the company’s top-selling vehicle this year with 19,834 examples sold.

A likely reason for this dip in i30 sales is the current hatchback is being replaced with a new model sourced from Europe. It won’t arrive in Australia until the third quarter of 2024.

The i30 Sedan on the other hand was recently updated and only just started arriving at local dealers.

“We’re incredibly grateful for the support of each and every buyer that has contributed to this milestone,” said Hyundai Motor Company Australia CEO Ted Lee.

“Hyundai is firmly etched into the Australian automotive landscape and we are hugely appreciative of the trust and loyalty so many people have placed in our brand, not least the heroes in the police, ambulance and emergency services who rely on our vehicles.

“As a thanks to all our loyal customers, we will continue to strive to deliver exceptional products and services, as we advance towards our vision for zero emissions by 2045.

“It’s fitting that our two millionth buyer is in the state where it began for our brand 37 years ago and a special thank you is on the way to our new customer so they can share in our celebrations.”
