The Goodwood Festival of Speed has gotten off to a dramatic start.
On the first day of the event, the one-of-one Hyundai RN22e concept car crashed into a series of hay bales after its driver lost control on a hard left turn.
A video shows the prototype rolling up to the start line and being given the green light to begin.
The driver reaches a straight and begins to gain speed and the tiniest bit of airtime as he continues to travel around the track.
Shortly after, the driver loses control, veering slightly to the left and right before entering the various rows of hay and ultimately smashing into a solid barrier.
The video jumps to a side angle which shows the driver and his passenger already out of vehicle seemingly unaffected.
A photo of the wreckage was posted to Instagram by Andrew Lewis showing the prototype’s front fascia completely shattered, with some of the LED headlight barely hanging on.
Housed under the bonnet, at least prior to the crash, was an electric motor mounted to the front axle and three containers of some description.
Both the video and photo show side panels scattered around the car, indicating the extent of the damage.
Hyundai has yet to comment on the incident and if the car will be repaired or rebuilt all together.
In an eerie coincidence, the concept debuted this time last year, almost to the day.
The RN22e concept was a electric prototype based on the Hyundai Ioniq 6 and is expected to evolve into a production Hyundai Ioniq 6 N.
Hyundai says the car was designed to show the “possibility of a high-performance EV model in the future”.
The RN22e concept has a dual-electric motor all-wheel drive setup producing total system outputs of 430kW of power and 740Nm of torque, the same outputs as the Kia EV6 GT.
Claimed top speed for the RN22e concept is over 250km/h.
