I Walked 500 Miles This Yr — Here is The Exercise Gear I Advocate


This year, I’ve walked over 500 miles, including an unforgettable 100+ mile journey along the Cotswold Way in England. Spoiler alert: I actually ended up walking over 130 miles! Training for this trek and developing a newfound love for walking was one of the best things I’ve ever done for myself.

I lost nearly 40 pounds in the process and I absolutely fell in love with walking and the English countryside. It also taught me the value of having the right gear! Whether you’re planning a long-distance hike, embarking on weekend walks, or shopping for the walking enthusiast in your life, these are my top picks for must-have workout gear and gifts.

1. Columbia Newton Ridge Hiking Boots

Your feet are your most important asset when walking long distances, and these boots were my lifesavers. Durable, waterproof, and comfortable right out of the box, they provide excellent support for uneven terrain while keeping your feet dry in unpredictable weather. Perfect for trails or city walking, they’re a great investment.

The best part? They are on sale and the price is a steal. I’ve owned a version of these boots for 7 years!

2. Hiking Poles

Hiking poles are a game-changer, especially on steep ascents or descents. They reduce strain on your knees, improve stability, and help distribute weight more evenly. They were essential for tackling the rolling hills of the Cotswolds.

Fun fact: you actually burn MORE calories using poles!

3. Wool Socks

Blisters? Not on my watch! I actually didn’t get one single blister. Wool socks keep your feet warm in winter, cool in summer, and blister-free year-round. They wick moisture and provide cushioning, making them a non-negotiable for any walking adventure.

I always kept a back up pair of socks because one day it was SUPER rainy.

4. Apple Watch

Tracking my steps, distance, and elevation was so motivating. The Apple Watch also kept me connected without having to pull out my phone, which is especially handy when you’re on the trail. Its fitness features are perfect for both training and daily activity tracking.

5. Craghoppers Rain Jacket

Walking in England means being prepared for rain, and this rain jacket was my constant companion. Lightweight yet waterproof, it’s easy to pack and provides excellent coverage without making you feel stuffy. Bonus: it looks great, too!

It has so many pockets which is great for your phone and snacks! I love the colors!

6. Amazon Leggings

Affordable, comfortable, and durable, these leggings were my go-to for both training and walking the trail. They’re stretchy enough for long days on the move but supportive enough to stay in place, no matter the distance. I also like these fleece lined leggings if it’s colder out!

7. Waterproof Hat

When it’s raining and you’re miles away from shelter, a waterproof hat is a lifesaver. It keeps the rain off your face and out of your eyes while allowing you to focus on the trail ahead.

8. CamelBak Backpack

A CamelBak backpack is perfect for carrying water and your essentials. The built-in hydration system makes staying hydrated on the go incredibly convenient, and it has enough storage for snacks, maps, and other small items.

9. Selfie Stick

Capture the memories! A selfie stick is a fun and practical accessory for snapping photos of your adventure, especially when traveling solo. This one is SUPER lightweight and easy but NOT long-lasting. I wanted something lightweight for the trail. This is a more sturdy and durable one I’ve had for years.

10. Portable Charger

Don’t let your devices die mid-walk. A portable charger is a must-have for keeping your phone and other electronics powered throughout the day.

11. Sweat-Wicking Shirt

Stay comfortable and dry with a sweat-wicking shirt. It’s lightweight, breathable, and perfect for long walks in any weather! I brought 12 of these. One for every day and then some of my walk. I also like these fitted ones!

12. Gimme Bands Hair Ties

For those with long hair, Gimme Bands hair ties are a game-changer. They’re strong, don’t slip, and are gentle on your hair, even after hours of wear. I’ve used these for YEARS.

13. Lipstick

One gentleman commented “why would you wear lipstick on the trail?!” Because… I wanted to. And this one stays put, so there.

14. Coat

I didn’t need to wear a coat on the trail, but if I did, it would be this one! It’s on major sale and it’s the one I wear to the Christmas Markets and hiking in the snowy alps! This coat is on major sale and is truly so comfy. I also recommend these gloves.
