Jeep previews off-road autonomous driving tech

Jeep has released a teaser video showing its off-road autonomous driving technology undergoing first tests in Moab, Utah.

A team of engineers led by Neda Cvijetic, Stellantis’ head of AI and autonomous driving, has been working on a system that will provide drivers with autonomous driving solutions off-road.

“These features and technology will have real-life applications on and off the trail in a wide range of driving conditions,” said Jeep CEO Christian Meunier.

Jeep tested the upcoming technology on two electrified Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe models.

The goal for the new technology is to “enhance the experiences of seasoned off-roaders, as well as customers who are new to driving the trail.”.

If you blink, you might miss the first demonstration in the video of the vehicle driving autonomously up rocky terrain.

The steering wheel moves abruptly as the vehicle navigates the tricky terrain.

Jeep has added additional cameras to the vehicle, potentially to help it more accurately analyse the vehicle’s surroundings.

In the video, a temporary centre-mounted infotainment system shows the view from the roof-mounted camera. The system appears to be able to identify vehicles ahead.

It’s expected the technology will launch in the US first before being expanded globally.

Jeep says the technology will help “enhance the experiences” of both seasoned off-roaders, as well as novices who have all the tools but little experience.
