JetBlue has agreed to purchase a minimum of 1 million gallons of sustainable aviation fuel for use at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport, with the option to purchase an additional 4 million gallons, the carrier announced Wednesday. Deliveries are projected to begin by the fourth quarter of 2024.
The neat SAF will be produced by Diamond Green Diesel and be blended with conventional jet fuel by Valero, bringing the total amount of fuel to 16.6 million gallons when counting all 5 million SAF gallons. World Fuel will deliver the blended SAF to JFK using existing infrastructure, including the Colonial pipeline, according to JetBlue.
The carrier hopes that the availability of SAF in New York will spur more local companies to participate in JetBlue’s SAF certificates program for corporate partners.
“As a global hub for travel and commerce, we have an opportunity for New York to be viewed as a center for responsible business as well,” JetBlue managing director of sustainability and environmental social governance Sara Bogdan said in a statement. “We’re asking companies who rely on the convenient and readily available flights to and from our New York area airports to help us show the demand and interest for more sustainable options.”
The JetBlue announcement followed an earlier one on Wednesday by United Airlines, which is bringing SAF to Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport.
