Kalinga Sets World Records for Gong Ensemble and Banga Dance
Congratulations, Kalinga Province!
The Province of Kalinga was able to set two Guinness World Records for breaking the record of the largest gong ensemble and largest pot dance last February 16.
The historic win was announced by the official adjudicator of Guinness World Records himself, Kazuyoshi Kirimura, during the event called “Awong chi Gangsa, Ad’tun chi Banga” or Call of a Thousand Gongs, Dance of a Thousand Pots, held in Kalinga Province.
The gong ensemble was composed of 3,440 male and 4,681 female Kalinga performers who also performed the banga dance– with pots on top of their heads. It is the highlight of the 28th Kalinga Foundation Anniversary, as well as the 4th Bodong Festival – a celebration to honor the peace rites of Kalinga.
To be able to count the number of performers for the gong ensemble and banga dance, everyone must pass through a scanner at the entrance which is being recorded online. The performers come from the different municipalities of Kalinga and Tabuk City.
In a report by the Philippine Information Agency, the members of the Adjudication Witnesses Panel include Benguet State University’s Stanley Anongos, the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples – Cordillera’s Atanacio Addog, and St. Mary’s University’s Allen Marquez and Kenneth Maslang.
The Guinness win is also the most historical event of the Kalinga people. The event was held at the Kalinga Sports Complex, and the announcement of their historic win was made after the show. It can be recalled that in 2018, it was the province of Kalinga’s first attempt to get the largest gong group win.
