About a year after the Lufthansa Group launched its Green Fares option in Europe, more than 1 million passengers have chosen the product, which is up from more than 500,000 announced in November when the airline group expanded the offering to select long-haul flights, Lufthansa announced Tuesday.
Overall, about 3 percent of passengers have used the offer. In business class, 11 percent of tickets booked through Lufthansa Group portals are for Green Fares tickets, according to the company. The product is “particularly popular” on routes including Hamburg-Munich, Zurich-London and Frankfurt-Berlin.
The product offsets individual, flight-related CO2 emissions with use of sustainable aviation fuel, which covers about 20 percent of emissions, and contributions to “high-quality climate protection projects” for the remaining 80 percent. Since the launch of Green Fares, customers have offset more than 77,000 metric tons of CO2, according to Lufthansa.
About 4 percent of passengers select Lufthansa’s options for more sustainable travel, which go beyond Green Fares, according to the company. Passengers can select tailored offers during the booking process with a higher proportion of SAF, and they can offset flight-related CO2 emissions during or after a flight.
In addition, as noted during the company’s fourth-quarter earnings call, about 1,500 corporate customers have invested in SAF with the Lufthansa Group.
