Lufthansa Orders 22 Lengthy-Haul Jets

The Lufthansa Group has placed an order for 22 Airbus and Boeing long-haul jets worth $7.5 billion, the company announced Thursday. The company is in “advanced negotiations” for additional long-haul aircraft purchases as well, it said.

Lufthansa has ordered 10 Airbus A350-1000 and five Airbus A350-900 aircraft, as well as seven Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft.

“These aircraft will be equipped with our new long-haul cabins, including the latest-generation seats in all classes of travel,” Lufthansa CEO Carsten Spohr said in a statement, adding the aircraft will help “position our airlines well to the fore again within the premium segment.”

The planes are slated to be delivered in the mid-2020s, according to the company, and will replace the Boeing 747-400s, 777-200s and 767-300s and the Airbus A340-600s, A340-300s and A330-200s in its fleet. According to Lufthansa, the new aircraft will consume 2.5 liters of fuel per passenger per 100 kilometers, “about 30 percent less than their predecessor aircraft types.”

“These new aircraft will also play a decisive role in helping us achieve our carbon emission reduction goals by 2030 as fuel-efficient aircraft which incorporate the latest manufacturing technology are by far the greatest lever for providing more climate protection within the aviation sector,” according to Spohr.

Lufthansa said it had signed a memorandum of understanding with Airbus to “further strengthen their cooperation in the field of sustainability and future technologies,” including “intensified use” of sustainable aviation fuel, ” the further optimization of operations through a more efficient flight management and exploration into the use of hydrogen.”

Spohr Term Extended

Meanwhile, Deutsche Lufthansa AG’s supervisory board agreed to extend Spohr’s contract as CEO through December 2028, the company announced Thursday. Spohr has served as Lufthansa CEO since 2014.

Spohr “not only mastered the most difficult crises and challenges but has also been responsible for the most economically successful years in the Group’s history,” board chairman Karl-Ludwig Kley said in a statement.

The board also extended the contract of CFO Remco Steenbergen, who has served in the position since January 2021, through December 2028.
