The Jetboil Flash Stove System probably needs no introduction since it’s the most popular camping and backpacking stove today. It is an integrated stove and pot system that can quickly boil water, making it ideal for rehydrating freeze-dried or dehydrated cook-in-a-bag or backpacking meals. In ideal conditions, it can boil 500 ml of water (2 cups) in 100 sec up to 20 times with a 100g gas canister. That’s pretty darn efficient. You can cook in the Jetboil Flash Stove and Pot if you simmer on a very low flame and don’t fill the pot more than half full, but the Flash Stove is geared more toward fast boiling than cooking. If you want to cook, the Jetboil MiniMo is the best Jetboil to get although the 2-person Jetboil Sumo works ok too.
The Flash Java Stove System adds a French Press Kit to the Flash Stove System. It consists of two metal rods that screw together and a combined filter and plunger. The filter and plunger are usually two distinct parts that screw together in a regular French Press, but Jetboil has combined them for simplicity, ease of use, and cleaning. A silicone ring surrounds the combined filter and plunger, so no coffee grounds get past their edge when you compress them to extract your brewed coffee.
The two metal rods screw together to form the plunger handle, but when separate, they’re easy to pack in the Flash stove pot together with the filter-plunger, the stove, a 100g gas canister, stove stand, and lid. It all fits perfectly together.
To make coffee, boil 16 oz of water and then add 4 tablespoons of ground coffee to the water (2 per cup), stirring it so it gets soaked. Let it sit for 3 minutes, then insert the filter-plunger into the top of the pot and press down slowly but firmly. When the filter plunger won’t go any further, pour your now-finished coffee into the measuring cup that fits over the bottom of the Flash cookpot and happily sip away.
I drink good coffee at home and often make coffee with a French Press, but I must say I was really impressed with the taste of the coffee made using the Flash Java Kit. I thought to myself, “I could get used to this!” Seriously, this brew is so much better than drinking instant Starbucks VIA, it’s not funny.
Cleanup is minor. You just need to rinse out the pot and plunger with water. If you want to adhere to Leave No Trace etiquette, you’ll want to pack out the used coffee grounds in a plastic bag and throw it out when you get back to civilization. If you’re worried about it leaking, consider using a Double Doodie Wag Bag with Biogel that absorbs liquid.
