Mammoth Overland is scheduled to roll out the first Genesis Edition of their new Tall Boy overlanding trailer before the end of the year. We got an early preview, however, spending a couple of days with the prototype camping off-grid high in the mountains near its Woodinville, Wash., factory.
The Mammoth Overland TL Tall Boy is a uniquely designed and constructed off-road camper trailer built right alongside Vashon Aircraft’s Ranger airplane. The TL uses the same aircraft-quality production equipment, aluminum materials, and attention to detail. It should result in a trailer that will serve its owners for generations.
Here’s what this new Tall Boy overland trailer has to offer families who love off-roading, camping off-grid, and doing it in a high-quality camper trailer designed specifically for such purposes.
In short: Mammoth Overland’s newest entry in the off-road trailer market comfortably sleeps four, has a bathroom, 6’3” headroom, and is rock-solid in design. Yet its aircraft-grade aluminum body makes it light enough to be towed by most mid-size pickups and SUVs.

Off-Road Camper Trailers
Overlanding and backcountry camping have attracted a lot of interest from younger families who love the outdoors and getting far away from the daily hustle and bustle of urban/city life whenever time allows. The typical RV travel trailer isn’t designed for that type of use, especially when the pavement ends and the road to that out-of-the-way destination turns to gravel, sand, or dirt. That’s why “overlanding,” or “off-road” trailers have become the campers of choice.
The downside of the typical overlanding/off-road trailer is they are usually built in either a version of a teardrop-style sleep-inside design, or as a cargo-style trailer set up with a roof-top tent so they can be towed over challenging backroads.
Teardrops sleep two inside and typically have less than 4 feet of headroom, while the roof-top sleeping quarters of cargo trailer designs put you 9 feet above the ground. So, trying to accommodate a family of four in either can be challenging, especially when it comes to having a bathroom and a comfortable sleeping space.
The larger, tandem-axle off-road camper trailers have more space and features, but can easily top $100K.
Mammoth Overland Tall Boy Review
Mammoth Overland’s 2,900-pound 2025 TL (Tall Boy) overlanding camping trailer stands 9 feet tall and comfortably sleeps four. It’s a limited-production, all-aluminum overlanding trailer that literally raises the roof on those norms, as I found out while camping in the prototype.
Not only is the TL “Genesis Edition” ruggedly built to withstand the most challenging of backcountry roads and off-road Jeep trails, but it also has an interior ceiling height of 6’3”, comfortably sleeps four on its king bed in front, and 6’2” long dual bunks on the street side. It also has an interior bathroom with a shower, which is a key feature for any family-oriented off-road trailer.
The Tall Boy is also one of the lightest and least expensive of “camper-style” tandem-axle off-road trailers to hit the market with an MSRP of $72,000 fully accessorized. And none of today’s off-road/overlanding-type campers are built using aircraft-grade materials, design, production, and quality control. There’s a reason for the latter elements of the Tall Boy.
Aircraft Manufacturing Approach
“My approach to the development of our off-road trailers is probably a little bit different than other off-road trailer manufacturers,” says Scott Taylor, Mammoth Overland’s president, who also had a long career as a production manager of numerous Boeing military and commercial aircraft programs. Scott is also the President/COO of Vashon Aircraft, Mammoth’s parent company.
“We designed this trailer with an aircraft manufacturer’s mindset: to make it really strong, really light, and elegantly functional with minimal moving parts. Our goal was to build a ‘generational’ off-road trailer; one that could be handed down to the next generation, and the next,” says the long-time pilot.
Sleep With a View
During our camping trip, we made good use of the indoor bathroom, as well as the array of USB and 110V plug-ins. And, we loved the sturdy two-piece door — the steps drop down like an airplane — that was very secure. The other aspect of the Tall Boy that my wife and I both thought was well done was the view the multiple oval-shaped roof windows along the roof sides gave of the surrounding area.
“Windows were an important part of the initial design. I want to experience being outside while flying my Vashon Ranger,” Scott explained prior to us leaving the factory, towing the TL behind his four-door Jeep Wrangler. “The same thing is how I feel about overlanding: I want to be outside experiencing nature. So let’s be outside when we’re inside, have the openness of not being enclosed and cooped up.”
As for sleeping accommodations in the Tall Boy, the thick king-sized foam mattress up front is very comfortable. Two big RV-style windows on each side allow a great view and are fully adjustable to open as far as needed for ventilation. They are also fitted with bug screens and shades like a traditional camping trailer.
Down below, on the street side, are two 24” W x 6’2” L bunks adjacent to the narrow aisle and across from the bathroom. The upper bunk can be quickly and easily deployed so it hinges down from the wall to turn the lower bunk into a comfy couch.
Outdoor Cooking
Outside is the kitchen. It’s located on the off-side rear and serves as the back wall of the pass-thru storage compartment. The aluminum unit swings out, locking in place to provide a stable cooking platform with a two-burner propane stove, small sink, and convenient 42-quart, 12V freezer/fridge. The sink is pretty small, and on the prototype model, it drained out on our feet — the production models will have a different sink drain setup.
In addition to the swing-out kitchen, the TL also has a nifty foot-wide, 3-foot-long drop-down side panel for a prep table — or a serving table. And, it opens to reveal a three-shelf pantry that can be accessed from inside or outside.
We used the table to hold a portable Kenyon SilKEN smokeless electric 110V grill that plugged into a receptacle inside the body opening. The TL has USB, 12V, and 110V plug-ins conveniently located throughout the trailer.

Storage Solutions
In the roomy rear storage compartment is a 50-gallon fresh water tank, enough to last a family of four for several days off-grid camping. The storage compartment can carry a lot of gear, which is good because storage inside is very limited unless gear is laid on top of the beds or stuffed into the vertical shelf at the entryway.
Up top of the Genesis Edition Tall Boy is the 23Zero 270-degree awning that spreads out to provide cover from the kitchen and around the rear of the camping trailer. Deploying it requires a ladder — or climbing up the square-tube ladder mounted on the front of the TL. You can also carry 500 pounds of gear secured to the roof rack of the Tall Boy.
Tall Boy Towing
On the road and on the trail, the Tall Boy tows easily because it has about 400 pounds of tongue weight, which makes trailer-induced sway nonexistent — at least, that’s how it towed behind Scott’s four-door Wrangler. The long tongue, Lock ‘N’ Roll articulating hitch, and tandem Timbren Axle-Less suspension helped isolate the Jeep from the trailer when the terrain got a little twisty and rough.

Overall, the Tall Boy Genesis Edition camping trailer looks and feels like it would be a good match for young, adventuresome families. The aircraft-style monocoque design of the body is designed to withstand the rigors of being towed over rough terrain such as that found in the Pacific Northwest, and the interior provides four-season comfort and a great view of those types of surroundings.
As Scott says, “I think we put a new spin on overlanding trailers with the Tall Boy. Our goal was to build a rugged, reliable off-road trailer that would be perfect for the mom and dad with two teenagers who love camping off-grid, towing with a mid-size pickup, Jeep, or SUV.”
