Thanks to an 8.3% year-on-year gain, new car wholesales in India cross the 4 million annual unit mark for the first time at 4,097,389 sales, smashing its previous record of 3,783,998 established just last year. As a reminder the 3 million mark was eclipsed in 2017. The all time monthly volume record was beaten three times this year: at 360,230 in August, 362,836 in September and 390,853 in October. Maruti Suzuki (+8.4%) evolves like the market to 41.7% share as does Hyundai (+9%) at 14.7%. Tata (+4.6%) is a little weaker but ranked #2 in December above Hyundai. Mahindra (+30.1%) scores a solid gain and climbs above the 10% share milestone at 10.6%. Kia (+0.2%) follows ahead of an euphoric Toyota (+37.9%) which broke its all-time monthly volume record for three successive months: in July, August and September. MG (+18.4%) is up two spots on 2022 to #8 and Citroen (+56.4%) can’t muster more than 0.2% share.
Over in the models ranking, the Maruti Suzuki Swift (+15.3%) topples the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R (-7.4%), edging past in December. This is the second time the Swift is #1 annually in India after 2020. The Maruti Suzuki Baleno (+4.5%) drops one rank to #3 while the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza (+30.7%) soars five spots to #4. The Tata Nexon (+1.2%) is down one to #5 but spectacularly topped the monthly charts in December, making it the only non-Maruti Suzuki model to do so in decades, potentially since 1984 when the Hindustan Ambassador is estimated to have led the charts. The Tata Punch (+15.6%) also impresses at #8 and ranked at a record #3 in December, with the Hyundai Creta (+11.7%) and Maruti Suzuki Eeco (+8.7%) also in positive in the remainder of the Top 10. Once the uncontested leader of the Indian market, the Maruti Suzuki Alto (-21.8%) freefalls to #12 this year. The Maruti Suzuki Fronx (#17) is the best-selling new launch above the Hyundai Exter (#30) and Honda Elevate (#45).
